What would you guys go for a 8800 GTS 640 or a X1950XT?

This would be running on a Asus P5N e SLI, e6400 with 2gig

The 8800 of course. The only reason to buy the x1950xt is if you don't want to spend as much money, and don't use Vista. Both will be amazing choices but the 8800 is in another league performance wise.

Go with a 512 mb ATI 2900xt, they perform almost as good as a GTX and better than a GTS for 100$ less.

Long time no see. It's Matt from inLo, anyways, I'm a 2900 fan but I wouldn't go as far as saying it's comparable to the GTX, The only game from what I've seen where it beats an ultra is Bioshock. That's only is DX9, and on top of that That's only a review or too, wait till the [H] Review.

I had the X1950XT and bought a 8800GTS 640MB card just recently and I'm happy with my decision. The X1950XT is a great card, especially for the price, but it just doesn't compare to the 8800GTS. A lot of games played just fine at 1680x1050 for me on the X1950XT, but some, like STALKER, didn't. With the 8800GTS, all of my games play nice and smooth at 1680x1050.

How about just answering the OP'S question? Is that too difficult for you?

OP..to answer your question the GTS 640 is better than the XT.

8800gts is better card, but its more expensive. You can run SLI on your board, so a nvidia card is a better choice than an ATI one if you plan on using two cards at some point.

Cheapest 2900XT on Newegg is $359 after MIR, while the cheapest 8800GTS 640 is $339 after MIR. The GTS 640 is also significantly cheaper before MIR.

To answer the OP's question, go for the 8800 GTS 640. It's faster, less expensive, and uses less power as compared to the 2900XT.

What do those prices have to do with my post?

I'm sorry, I assumed after I read the OP's post he was comparing an 8-series to the 2900 series cards (why on earth would he be talking about cards that have such a massive gap in price?). Therefore when I read "GTS 640 is more expensive" I decided to check the prices.

If that is really the OP's question, then the 8-series no doubt.

"Matrox Perhelia vs. S3 Chrome: Your thoughts?"

OK, seriously, Why buy now with the new stuff coming in two months? Even if you don't buy that, it will drive down the prices of the cards you mentioned. You also need to consider when you're switching to Vista, because then the X1950XT is much more limited. If Vista is in your future but a G9*/GTX/Ultra sized paycheck isn't, then consider either the 2900XT or the 8800GTS 640. Both are awesome cards, and Nvidia is bound to Forest Gump itself a good Vista driver eventually. :D
