Ok i am interested in the ATi x800 but there are none to be found anywhere so is there a comprable nvida card or should i just wait

is the 6800gt oc really gonna be as good as the x800? i have always been partial to nvida but lately everyone is telling me to check into ati so i dont know what to do i want the best for no more than the 400 price sticker

6800GT is definetly just as good if not better than an X800pro.
both are very good choices.

The 6800 GT will almost assuradly be faster then the X800Pro along with its full support for Pixel Shader 3.0 which just got released in the DirectX 9.0c update. And nVidia cards are well known to overclock better then ATi cards.

Both are great cards though and i dont think your going to be playing any games that will truly tax ither one of them very hardcore.

did you read [H]'s review or anyone elses reviews on overclocking the x800 pro? they have gotten insanely high numbers out of them and it boosts performance a lot

I wave the ati flag. For the last two years ATI has dominated Nvidia in proformace. I believe Nvidia is cheaper though.

im trying to decide between the 6800 GT OC or the x800xt pe... the GT is slightly cheaper... and it is coming out earlier... i have an x800xt pe on preorder....

reallly its coming down to Doom 3. John Carmack has already stated he is using PS 3.0. The fps on the game is capped at 60fps so it doesnt matter all that much if doom runs slower on ati as long as its above that. Im worried about image quality....

Brent i know you are keen on "if its not out then we cant make a guess" but in YOUR personal OPINION.... do you think the 6800 will have a noticeable image quality advantage over ati? I know noone knows yet. But you definitely know more than i do. Or hell if anyone has their opinion share it. Doom 3 is my number 1 top priority. But im looking long term also . And ATI's x800xt pe is no slouch. Also that 3dc? i think it may be used later on greatly. Anyway... opinions welcome

3DC isn't as revolutionary as ATI would have you believe. It is just their own compression technology. The 6800 will have the same image qualtiy as the X800 series. PS3.0 does NOT improve image quality, it simply speeds things up. The 6800 GT is very competitive with the X800XT PE, although it is slower. Do remember that the 6800 GT competes directly with the X800 Pro, and not the X800XT PE. The 6800 GT is the best price to performance value of all the next-gen cards. Also, Nvidia is faster in OpenGL, so they will most likely have the Doom 3 advantage. ATI is currently rewriting their OpenGL drivers from scratch so this *may* change in the future.
