Anyone else looking forward to see what these 2 companies can offer in terms of physics? I think it's great to have 3 contenders instead of just Ageia. Personally, I would rather spend $99 on a X1600 Pro PCI-E to do my physics than a $300 PCI PhysX card. I like what I see from the Tech videos these companies are putting out.

Well apparantly the graphics cards only support "effects" physics, like particles flying off from stuff or debris from explosions. You'd still need to use the CPU to run the physics API.

Besides, it won't really be effective until DX10 comes out. DX9 can't handle a whole lot of objects, and there's too much latency between code passes.

Correction, the graphics cards can do BOTH effects AND gamplay physics. But only at the moment are spending time on effects physics because it is easier for the game developers to implement.

Current DX9 GPUs can do effects and gameplay physics acceleration.

You make a great point about objects and latency in DX9 though. DX10 and DX10 GPUs are better suited for Physics acceleration indeed.

And more cost effective for them as well, that way they don't have to require you to run dedicated hardware to run their game.

In addition, new bottlenecks will arise and I especially do not want to lose any GPU performance-- I know I am not alone.

Hence the no physcis for 9-12 months from ATI ;)
They say they got it ..but can't show anything

Terra....

They have shown real time demos of physics acceleration in action, and working well.

Yes, I agree games are where it matters most and none are out yet that use GPUs for physics acceleration.

They have shown plenty of demo's at conventions

You write that as if it were some sort of cherry topping. When in reality it is just the empty cup waiting to be filled with something tangible. MMmmm.... icecream.

The Ageia PhysX solution can't do anything other than add DOS blocks to GRAW and a magma thrower to BoS.

I ask PLEASE!! close this topic it's already just another flame war about the same information so it's pointless to keep it open. We have to many of these.

Even if that was true, it would be tons more than what we can do with ATI/Nvidia right now.

Not exactly, all 3 companies(ati, nvidia and ageia) can only really show techdemos. There are more threads in this forum about new Techdemos that Ageia shows than actual games utilizing their hardware.

As of right now, Ageia has nothing worth even considering as a proof of their superiority. Therefore AS OF RIGHT NOW they are superior at absolutely NOTHING. Quoting the fact that there is 100+ games coming out for it as a few of us like to proves NOTHING.

For all we know these games might blow. Daikatana was once praised as the future of gaming. BEFORE it was released. So all the hype, especially about the Cell Factor game is just PR, untill the game is released.

Demos are a pretty shaky leg to stand on.

Does the PPU render the graphics YES/NO?

Terra - Don't blame the PPU for a GPU(graphics code) problem...

You are mistaken
There are 6 games now that uses the PhysX on diffrent levels...
There are ZERO games that show ANY GPU-"Physcis"...

Terra - Reality bites...

And why don't the let us(eg. you) try them hands on?
All they do is talk...and then say"Wait 9-12 months" (DX10)

Terra - They got nothing to show but PR...

I believe the word "worth" was included in my post. If you think the games you speak of show worthy use of physics, maybe that could explain your obsession with Aegia.

WOW. Just now noticed this gem.

That could very well be sig worthy.

This is just getting ridiculous.

Brent could you lock all the threads even remotely relating to this one, as there's been no new developments in them what so ever.

Reopen them when some games that use the PPU come out that are attractive to more than just Terra and cyks.

3contenders?

Like API.
PhysX vs HavokFX and later MS DirecPhysX
Or hardware
PPU vs SM3 GPU
Or
nV vs ATI GPU PhysX power.

Its a complicated mix of
Ageia, Havok, ATI, nV, MS

As I see it. Ageia is starting a new bussnes. ATI/nV smell money and get into. Havok have no choice to respond but coming with its own PPU solution its to late, so its jump on the GPU for PhysX wagon to keep the lead small. Because Ageia makes big momentum in the game developing market with its PhysX plans and support.

As I see it, Ageia is the underdog. ATI and nV have the GPU market to fall back. But due to there interrest. Ageia wake them up. Mo Physics in games is now unstoppable.

Altho Ageia running upfront. The competition kicks in to early. 9month is not much in game design market. 3dFX had a lot more time to get stable. Glide was the Game 3D Api a couple of years.

For $99 you give up on Gameplay Physics. A big choice to make. Unless poor budged is al saying. For a lot of people it will.
Performance deference unkown just from hear say claims (ATI).
And in my case I bought the P1 PhysX so $300 is not the biggest problem.Budged wise. I would go for more GPU effect physix performance. At least €250 for a physics Gpu I like eye candy. But very interrested in gameplay physics.

Till the time the GPU camp get there gameplay Physics act on. R600 will be there maybe the refressh R680 and a P2 PhysX. Late 2007 or even later.
Price, Performance, support, take over, produkt lines that situation is totaly open.
Will Ageia still be there?

The next time span of one year is very crusial for ageia to be in busness and depends if the 65 plus game push PhysX upfront. to with stand the delayed competition.

Firstly, Brent is here to offer accurate information from the enthusiast's perspective, not to babysit. That's my job. :)

And I agree that this bickering is getting ridiculous and it WILL stop, I promise you.
