ATI, Nvidia image quality question

I didn't want to hijack some other thread, so i'll ask it here. I never had ATI card before, and i have my eye on 4870/4870x2, but i would like to know if somebody who had both of these cards (ATI and Nvidia) ever noticed any difference in image quality. I know it depends a lot on the screen too, but i mean is there any difference in color quality / sharper image /color depth. I hope i can get some answers without starting a war here ;).

Thanks in advance

I hope this doesnt turn into a flame war but:

I feel that ati has had better image quality. i find it more vibrant and sharp.

i can tell the difference between them, but don't really prefer either one. i know i like ati's vista drivers better, yet i prefere nvidia's in games. image quality is great with both though.

This is all opinion but I feel it's fairly well founded.

ATI tends to look better when using analog connections. So if you're using VGA things will likely look a little sharper. Nvidia generally has some cheaper parts and that causes some blurriness. If you're using DVI/HDMI it won't matter since digital is digital.

In game quality is roughly equal. AMD tends to have a slightly higher saturation and sharpness level by default but it's all control panel based and more of a personal preference than a real difference in IQ. A couple years back with the 7900 series there were some AF quality issues for Nvidia but those are gone on any modern hardware.

It depends on the tasks, Sometimes ATI cards look slightly better, Sometimes nvidia cards do.

Overall I think ATI has a few more "Wins" in image quality but really its so minuscule that you wouldn't notice it unless your a videophile.

AF on 8xxx+ nvidia cards is slightly better than the AF on 2xxx+ ati cards.

Other than that there's not much difference.

I noticed that nvidia cards produce slightly darker graphics than ATI going from my 8800GT to this 4850. It's actually beneficial to have a little more brightness with this cocked up monitor I have. Several places are pitch black in Source engine games where they limit the gamma you can set.

Ati has had a better history in image quality plus 10.1 directx support
Nvidia has had better drivers thus better frame rates
I am a nvidia fanboy that includes getting price raped for their top of the line cards
Glad to see nvidia getting price raped by Ati for a change
Rethinking the whole videocard scene with the 280's going for $650 and with dual and tri sli sucking in framerates and price
PS: Own a 9800 ? They be going for $199-$229 July 15th
Its hard to love nvidia when you get screwed twice in 1 month
ATI needs a seriously hard look at when the numbers come out
How many times can you really play Crysis and not say this is getting old?
Other then that no games really need all that power

Can you explain this in English please?

Going from nVidia to ATi, the colors actually seemed over saturated. I got used to it.
Once back to nVidia, they seemed too low a saturation. I used DV (Digital Vibrance)
to get the over saturation ATi look back. I now use no DV for a more natural look for my tastes.

I would have to half agree with you on the oversaturated colors for ATI.

Top: 4850
Bottom: x1800XT
(look at the gun sprites)

Guess it just depends on the video card, huh?

The 4850 does look more natural IMO.
Both camps offer control panel settings to adjust to personal tastes.
I used a 9700 Pro/X800 Pro/X1950 Pro before getting 8800GTXs and adjusted the color saturation slightly down when running ATi and slightly up when running the 8800s.
Just a matter of personal tastes and changing a settings. Just like adjusting your monitor to suit your tastes.

Only the wide and narrow tent options cause any blurring at all. If you're using edge-detect along with regular AA there shouldn't be any blurring.

The Direct X software mode produces "perfect" output (i.e. correct colours, shading etc) so it would be good to compare that with ATI and nVidia to see who is off.
