ATI Multi VPU Gets Official "Crossfire"

ATI Technologies has applied to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for registering CrossFire brand-name. Currently it is unclear what the trademark should mean, but it is highly possible that CrossFire will be the official brand to mark the company’s multi-VPU technology, which, according to some web-sites, will be introduced in weeks.

“ATI CrossFire” and “CrossFire” were registered in the United States Patent and Trademark Office in early May by attorney of record Lynn M. Jordan. The exact meaning of the brand-name is unclear and ATI’s official spokesperson declined to comment on the matter. Crossfire means bullets fired towards a point from different directions, which may be a metaphor of frames rendered by different graphics cards.

About a week ago a web-site published a story claiming that ATI’s forthcoming R520 would not be launched in June, 2005, as expected, but will be announced at a later date due to release of ATI’s multi-VPU technology, which now has some chances to be called ATI CrossFire. While ATI’s officials do not comment on the unannounced products, some sources close to the company indicated that the information has good chances to be accurate and ATI would launch its next-generation VPU when it is feasible from the tactical point of view, as currently the company’s RADEON X850 XT Platinum Edition is the world’s fastest single-chip graphics accelerator. Some other sources said ATI was seriously working on the launch of the company’s multi-GPU consumer technology.

The multi-GPU technology from ATI will have a number of fundamental shifts from technologies of this kind, sources close to ATI said late last year. The main thing ATI was working on is how to enable two different graphics cards to work in pair, providing enhancements to gamers who use the technology. In early 2005 ATI indicated to its partners that the technology did not require any physical connectors between the cards, but also noted that two identical graphics cards have to be installed. Some sources close to the company also said that ATI’s multi-VPU technology is concentrated on improving image quality on the first place rather than adding substantial performance boost over single-VPU configurations.

Since when is an improvement in video quality not a performance boost? Last time i looked image quality was everything a video card is about.

There it is, that phrase indicates to me that they want some wiggle room when customers complain about not getting "x" amount of performance increase in dual card mode versus a single card. Perhapse the nVIDIA SLI interview that mentioned not having a bridge could be a diminishment in performance really does apply and isn't just competition bashing.

Guess we'll only really know when the products are available for purchase, but that statement isn't really a good thing to have stated.

That made news last week or the week before even.

If you already knew about thats nice, dont have to post that you had already read. Simply was posting for others to read.

With how much the bouncing between "you need a bridge/you dont" "you need the same cards/ you dont"

Im beginning to wonder if its going to require a bridge, which im sure it will, for use only when you use 2 cards that are not identicle. Example X850 and an X800. Then you would need a bridge as well as the master card having support for that bridge so that it can downscale itself to the slower card.

If you use identicle cards, X850 X850 then you're good to go. Thats what its beginning to sound like to me.

Don't forget that you will need the ATi mobo too ;)

Terra - Or am I mistaken? :)

Uh - YEAH... I was going to point that out immediately.. this should get interesting!

What about CNN's Crossfire ... ?

Lol .. too many crossfires .. Maybe it's about time I duck and hide..

Nobody owns the name crossfire.

Well, none the less, it is the name of Chrysler's new sports car... so there may be some branding rights getting trampled... we will see.

Pfftm, ATI as no need to pay attention to things so silly as "Laws". especially when they concern an american car company ;)

I wouldn't think it would be a problem. No one is going to buy a Chrysler Crossfire but mistakenly pick up the ATi dual card solution instead.

No.....ATi can name it crossfire becuase it does not directly conflict with crystler and there sales. They are in a totaly different market.

DUH!! but you'd be surprized what companies will fuss over... I am not saying it will happen, I am saying it could happen.

yes - quite different markets, and yet they are both "ultra high end" products in their respective markets... so perhaps it this could benefir them somehow... Hmmm.... anyways... the more I think about it the more I think this will amount to nothing... but who knows. :)

Except....ATI's drivers dont suck? Unless your stuck in the time portal of the Rage years.

ATI's drivers are on par and above Nvidia in quite a few ways. Why does someone have to be ignorant and always say that?

tell my 9800 xt that ati's drivers dont suck.

it will disagre w/ you.

They suck.

i could see the ad now..

a computer gamer is pulling his hair out screaming .... "get stuck in the crossfire of ati drivers"

lol..

but seriously.. i wonder how it will turn out.

it will be gravy

or

nasty..

no inbetween on this one.

o yea... i love how you cant turn off AA w/ ati drivers but you can with nvidia drivers.

and no.. the application wont let me turn it off either.

what if i dont want aa but would rather have speed?

Can you not write a post with all the incesant short sentances, spaces between lines and drivel? My eyes hurt when you start to post cos they have to scroll so much.

You really gotta let that driver one slip tho, wearing thin. Geekcomputing having small driver probs with a 9800xt doesn't equal ATi drivers SUXXORS....

Funny tho, I've not had one problem since my old 9600pro...that's going thru 4 ATi cards....maybe your looking for problems, or maybe you should sell the 9800xt and buy a 6600gt? I'm sure someone would snap up the xt.

Ive owned a ATI and Nvidia card, both can have minor problems with drivers, But ive noticed that 90% or more of the time its a conflict with my specific setup, or im just a jackass and its my problem not the drivers, Idiots point a finger first and ask questions later, some people need to get a clue.

/off topic

I too have both two X8X0 series cards and two 6800 series cards. Both have good drivers but ATI is way more attentive to their customers by releasing drivers every month. Nvidia is lucky to get three official releases a year.
/ on topic

I can't wait to buy my "Crossfire" based system, hopefully soon.

I can turn off AA with my ATI Drivers....
What are you talking about geekcomputing?
