ATI Multi VPU confirmed

I'm curious how ATI pull up with letting existing X800/X850 work ?

I'm thinking that setup will require a bridge chip to distribute the tasks along with a special set of drivers (keep in mind it's just a guess i'm throwing here).
 
from what ive read they will run everything throught the pci bus.

again.. thats just rumors.

i wonder how the drivers will turn out.
 
According to what I've read at the inquirer, there IS an external bus, and there will be 2 types of cards.. One master and the other one is Slave.. All the X800s and X850s available now could be used as slaves..

I don't like this much..
 
The only thing of any use at all in that article is confirmation ATI is doing AFR.

Of course for them to do AFR mixing current gen cards with future gen cards, they will have to slow down the future gen cards to the speed current gen can output. :(

I can't see anyone wanting to do this to save a few bucks.
 
I now remember it from some other threads. It was running at the slowest video card speed if a mixed pair is installed and that share a external bus. I guess it's a custom motherboard chipset to do that. Myself, I won't be interested in that kind of tradeoffs and will seek for a faster single-card for the best bang for the buck.

But Rollo is right, the only thing confirmed is the confirmation of a multi gpu setup. The rest is just speculations so we should wait for E3 for more informations.

Hmmm. If we are going by Inquirer's quotes, then you'll not like this one:

Instead of an internal bridge like the nVIDIA solution, you'll have a dongle like doohicky on the back of your case. Of course this doesn't upset the existing 800 and 850 owners since an internal bridge would require card replacements.

I suspect they'll move to an internal bridge like nVIDIA's with their future card releases to help "beautify" the setup.

Since they are playing "catchup" to SLI, despite people that would like to point to special cards produced for similators, ATI simply bungled the connector issue in my opinion and if the rumors are acurate. ATI should have added a bridge connector to their PCI-E solutions from the begining with the "potential" to be used for AMR if they had decided to release it.

I suspect the rumors about existing cards only being available as "slaves" is most likely accurate. They'll most likely be developing a DVI input onthe master card that does the framebuffer comparison that needs to be performed regardless of the connection technology. Since DVI's bandwidth is less that of the high speed bridge used by the nVIDIA solution and nVIDIA's is a framebuffer comparison of the raw data, it'll be interesting to see if the visual quality is impacted. DVI still has framebuffer content conversion going on, kinda of a DDC (digital, digital covernter) versus a DAC (Digital Analog Coverter) used for a standard RGB 15 pin connection. This has to have some marginal impact on quality.

Again, this is pure speculation and based on "unfounded" rumors in my opinion. Don't know how Inquirer can state it's offical when I don't find any press releases about it on www.atitech.com.
