I'm not usually a fan of any one brand of card, but I don't like ATI's claims on their webpage...

"The RADEON® X800 graphics technology is the world’s fastest and most powerful VPU*"

at the bottom if you look for the "asterisk" upon how they came upon this claim:

"*RADEON X800 XT 256MB DDR compared with NVIDIA’s eVGA FX5950 256MB DDR"

And yes, the GeForce 6800 series was out by the time that statement was made...

That's like comparing the GeForce 6800 Ultra to the Radeon 9800XT, sheesh

How can it be false when it's true when stated in that context?

Not false claims, just shitty ones.

Damn that's shady. But it's smart too. They can't claim to be more powerful than the 6800. Remember when Apple said that about their G5 and they damned near got sued for it. That was pretty funny all in all.

i would think that "fastest" and "most powerful" mean the same thing :p
Not really. Look at AMD vs Intel. Intel is fastest, AMD is more powerful. ;)

That page is an absolute classic.

Hell Nvidia should now claim the worlds fastest GPU based on direct comparisoins of the 6800 against the 9800XT.

fuggin morons ;)

90% of the threads around here make me want to bitch slap people.

Well it's false because the claim is

"The RADEON® X800 graphics technology is the world’s fastest and most powerful VPU*"

They are saying that it's the fastest VPU in the world which is a false claim. Just because in the asterisk they say something to the effect of "when not compared to faster VPU's" is just like saying.

"We have the best tasting donuts in the world!*"

"*when not compared to better tasting donuts..."

Looking at that statement and your location description, you got issues....

As for the claim, they all do that. And by "they" I mean practically every company, especially in the IT world.

Every company except NVidia... and Matrox... which are the only other two companies that matter in this circumstance (if I'm missing out some smaller ones, then feel free to point them out)

In fact I can't think of any other graphics card company (or cpu company anymore) that makes claims like this...

Actually, no it wasnt. It was paper launched yeah, but the X800's were out about a month before the 6800's. So at the time, NV's fastest card out was the 5950 Ultra. So technically it was and still is correct. Sure its misleading, just like a billion other advertisements for billions of other products.

Virtually every company does the same thing, usually with a small disclaimer at the bottom. nVidia had a Farcry add for a few months in PC Gamer and others, claiming to have the best expierence playing it, you needed their cards. Not true, since the XT/PE is the fastest card for it. And at the time, before the 1.2 patch, the retail version was faster on the Pro rather than the GT too.

Yes its annoying, but its not just in video cards. Its in almost everything.

Well in the Far Cry ad, NVidia didn't claim you needed "their video cards" but rather you needed their new 6800 series of video cards.

Which isn't all that false, with a 6800 GT you can enjoy far cry in all its glory with everything maxxed out at high resolution.

Sure you get an extra 10 fps with the x800XTPE but it's pretty much the same experience... that is... good:p

It's not like NVidia claimed "6800 series is the fastest card for Far Cry"

I dont remember the words, but they sure implied it. I dont think I have an old issue to get the exact words. But the FX's had a lot of documented problems with Farcry, before the 6800's were out. Thats not the best expierence.

Ya seriously. Before patch 1.2 I ran FC under the R300. It looked better and peformed better than the NV path. Actually, even under patch 1.2 I'm still running the ati path [SM2.0B]. Heh.

This does remind me of the first Crapple G5 commercial when they benched their cpu against Intel running optimized compiler for theirs and generic for Intel. On top of that claiming it was the first 64bit cpu even though AMD had the first one. I never liked Apple so Im glad that they were ordered to withdraw the commercials.
