What ATi card are you running with HL2 and what settings is it allowing you to play at.

I have a 9600XT and am playing at 1024x768 with high texture and model detail with 4xAF. Just wondering how much better these more expensive cards allow you to play it.

This is of course in general since other specs play a large roll as well.

X800 pro PCI-E:

1280x1024 (LCD mode)

reflect all
options on all high
2xAA + 8xAF

I would really like to play at 1280x1024 since that is the native resolution of my monitor, but oh well.

thats why i play it, its the native res. So i got a VC that can handle it.

x800 xt pe
left all options to default set

1280x1024 (edit i forgot that part :p)
all options high
4xaa 8xaf
vertical sync on (not default)
reflect world

1280X1024, all high, 4aa8af .. reflect world..

Is Vsync EVER default? Doubt it.. I enabled it..

System specs are in my sig....

Everything set to QUALITY in the ati control panel
In game video settings all cranked to HIGH
4xAA and 8xAF
Vertical Sync enabled (75Hz refresh rate)
1152x864/32 resolution on my 17" CRT (highest res it supports)
4.11 Cats

I noticed if you turned OFF TEMPORAL AA it saves you some fps. Not much about 7- 8 frames. I didn't notice a difference in IQ soo i just turn on regular AA works great! I basically have a x800 xt overclocked to pe speeds. I think my weakest part of my system is my CPU I wish i had a AMD64
:(

Radeon 9800 Pro @ 400/350 with 4.12b:

1280x1024 (LCD)
no AA/AF
everything on high
reflect world
vsync off

highest sound settings w 4-speaker surround (4.1)

60-70 fps avg, min 25

does it have to be ati? well if it is i dun care!! hehe

6800 ultra here
1600x1200 4xaa 16xaf runs pretty darn nice.... and smooth.... except for those autosaves.. but i disabled that and SMOOTH.. hehe

Well, considering the thread is titled 'ATi + HL2' and the thread is indeed located in the ATI section of the video forum, I'd say that's a pretty big hint that the original poster is only interested in ATI card performance.

I could be wrong, but don't think I am in this case.

"how much better these more expensive cards allow you to play it"

he didn;t say nothing about ati here haha but yeah.. they perform alot better than ur 9600xt... but if u can play it fine with it.. no point in upgrading unless u want to run higher resolution.. u should wait for next-gen cards which will give u a biggo boost! hehe

I plan on waiting since i can play the game fine now. I am just curious as to what these cards can do for.... 400+ dollars

1600 6xAA / 16xAF is pretty decent for that price, in my opinion. Considering it's almost the same in every other game out there. Although keep in mind this is an x800 Pro flashed to XT, so I didn't pay $600 ;)

In fact, most people didn't pay $600 :p

i bought a true x800 xt for $450 and overclocked it to PE speeds

Same here, I got a blue oem Sapphire X800XT which had the samsung 1.6ns ram on it, with a simple overclock I got it to above platinum speeds for around 455 bucks. I know it is still more expensive than those with the pro vivo's, but im still happy with it. As far as what I run HL2 in... 6X Temporal AA, 16X Antistrophic filtering, reflect all, all options set to highest, and 1680X1050 native resolution (I have a Dell 2005FPW widescreen monitor). Game runs great. I was just wondering though, how do you disable autosave in hl2? Sorry to stray from the topic...

how many fps are you guys getting with everything on high though?

Radeon 9800 Pro @ 9800XT with 1024*768 resolution, 4xAA and 8xAF, reflect all and all the jazz and ofcourse vsync.

FPS:
30-35 outdoors with enemies.
41-43 outdoors without enemies.
60-75 indoors with enemies.
80-85 indoors without enemies.

1280x1024 (native for my LCD)
Reflect world
Vsync off
everything on high
2xaa, 2xaf
Average framerate seen was 70fps using 4.12 betas, ~50fps when stuff got hella busy
Specs in sig, gonna volt-mod after my exams next week (1.7V gpu 2.7V BGA stock, so I got lots of room to play) :D

8500 64MB, run at 1024, everything maxed+ 16AF.
It does get choppy sometimes, but for the most part I get around 40FPS in the game.
Changing the texture detail to medium helps.
I was honestly surprised how well it plays the game, since the other "next gen" games play like ass- far cry, doom3.
It auto detected my sys and had it at 800x600 and medium details, so I ran some benchmarks, then upped the detail seeing as the fps was fantastic.

AXP(tbred)@2.2GHz(200x11), 1GB HyperX, BBA X800 Pro@500/500

HL2 at 1600x1200, 4x/8x, everything on High, Reflect All, and vsync ON. Average is around 60fps with drops into the 40's and very rarely the upper 20's when the Shiite hits the fan.

i only hit 70fps highest at any time in cs source but thaqt is because i am running it on a geforce 4 mx 420 (yeh the card taht has a full 64mb SD) i am waiting til i get my x800XT til i play hl2 (should arrive tomorrow :D)

anyway here is a little trick for all of u... in the console (if u cant get into console go to your steam games list, right click the game, properties, launch options... and type in launch options -console) anyway type into your console to get a little more fps these commands

fps_max 500
r_mmx 1
r_3dnow 1
developer 1

you should be hitting around an extra 10 fps at least!! you can use the same for normal cs except for the r_3dnow 1 they didnt support that in half-life 1 and its mods and the commands usually make more of a difference in half-life 1 and cs

You're running 1680 with 6x TAA / 16xAF at reasonable framerates? May I ask how high you got that card to? And I would assume you're using an FX of some sort.

I could be wrong, but I was understanding that if a game can handle high frame rates you'll get the improved effects of TAA. If you're speeds aren't, it just pretty much goes back down to whatever you have (so say if 2xTAA is on, you get 4xAA image but if the framerate drops, you go back to 2xAA)

Sorry for thread Hi-Jacking ... but I already posted my resolution on the first page. :p

Does everyone here use FRAPS to calc. their fps ?

It did work in Doom 3 but I can't get it to work on HL2 ... I d/l the new version 1.9c last night but didnt give it a try ... Can someone here tell me how you guys get fps.

Doom 3 : timedemo demo1
HL2 : timedemo demoname (If I recall correctly)

It runs a timedemo for you and gives you the results at the end. No need for Fraps.

ok i tried timedemo .. the problem is .. I have the updated Source engine and i don't think there are timedemo's out there that work on the updated Source version. If there are ... link please :D

I found a HL2 benchmark program on Guru3D ...

I ran it at 1280X1024 6xAA 8xAF everything high Catalyst 4.12
I got 51.9 fps ... I believe that's really slow ... probably my 2.8C
