I'm not surprised. This continues a trend that started a long time ago with the GF-6 series. The new mid range cards always seem to feature "fixed" or "complete" video decoding. Kind like 88 owners not having the same feature set as 85/86 owners. To do the decoding in software, the stream processors must be pretty powerful.
With integrated sound and true HDMI capability I was under impression R600 would of course have UVD and would be marketed as "the media PC card". And so were most of the reviewers out there and even retail boxes say it has UVD.
So there has been some major confusion. And I believe AMD's marketing was aware of it.
