I'm wondering if there is any way I can force Super Sampling AA, rather than Multi Sampling?

It's possible, but only if you know how to mod drivers. SSAA just takes too much out of the card, any card, and it gets harder to notice it at higher resolutions (1920x1200 good example), so there's really no point.

Well, I have my reasons for wanting it.

How do I do it - or is there a program out there to allow me to enable it?

Super sampling effectively uses a really high resolution, scales it down to your screen settings, applies MSAA and you get a really crisp image, it takes really good cards to run at those settings

My 6800 can run MOHAA(ok graphics) with 8xS AA and be playable @ 1024x768 though

at 1280x1024, the 128mb of memory holds me back, so i get fps dips

By the way, your title is misleading FSAA stands for Full Screen Anti Aliasing, which is what all modern cards use

ALL Radeon cards running on a MAC can enable Super Sampling.

Why?

Probably due to the fact that on a MAC, ATI don't care about performance figures in reviews so much. If they gave the PC world SSAA, you'd find reviews that enabled this mode against Nvidia's MSAA to make ATI look bad. So ATI take away this problem altogether.

ATI will NEVER implement SSAA in their drivers (even though we know they blatantly can do it pretty easily). I started a huge petition at Rage3d.com to pester ATI about this via their 'feature request' form for their drivers. Terry Makedon personally entered the petition thread and (with less flavour) told us to fuck off and outright said SSAA will never be implemented. He told us to hold out for some truly amazing new stuff in the Catalysts instead which would blow us away (this was back in December 2003). He was referring to the Catalyst Control Centre ( 'lol' ).

I dont think that will happen. I cant divert our efforts from what we are working on for this. It is not as beneficial as you may have been led to believe. It will not significantly increase game experience, most games will not benefit from it, and the amount of driver work required to do this simply can not be justified.

I do realize the demand for it and that is why I am even addressing it.

Sorry guys
So that is that...

hmm... Is it available in the nVidia variety?

I don't play games THAT much - but if a 6800 will allow me SSAA, then yes, I will go that route.

Not straight-out.

But nVidia offers a lot of mixed modes that DO. For example, the "8xAA" mentioned above is actually 2xSSAA and 4xMSAA performed on the same image. Looks VERY nice - but do keep in mind that *most* modern games don't like SSAA at all. Things like text on the screen and HUD becomes unreadable, etc.

I FOUND OUT HOW!!!!! took about an hour of googleing but :D

http://www.nonatainment.de/portal/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabindex=7&tabid=19

make sure you download the rar/zip and the dx update, and then extraxt it all into the root direc of the game, make sure to throw the d3dx9_26.dll file around the game directoys as well(otherwise you get a file missing error) I got 6xMSAA4xSSAA16xAF working VERY smoothly on hl2, it was like GOD ANTI ALIASTING only problem is theres a bug in atis drivers that destroys the MSAA when downsampaling so basicly turning on MSAA is stupid as its a performace hog that does nothing when SSAA is enabled, oh and just check the plugin to be enabled you don't have to worry aboyt that x,y -0.5 shi... stuff just to show how good this is here a screenshot from HL2 on my x850xt, YES AN ATI CARD, NOT AN NVIDIA CARD DOING TRSAA!!!

4xSSAA+16xAF

6xMSAA+16AF

Humus release and quick fix to allow Alpha AAd for ATI cards... see the rage3d radeon section as its a sticky. It works very well in both OpenGL and D3D. However some of the anti-cheat programs flag is a hack and will boot you :( But at least it works :)
