I've never gotten anything but a black window when trying to use the PureVideo decoder

Were you using Overlay or VMR9, how was the media app setup with?

What settings are you guys using w/ffdshow?

Relevant Hardware/Software: 2.3Ghz Mobile AXP 2400+, BFG 5700U with Zoomplayer, Dscaler5 .07, FFDshow build 20051129, VMR9 fullscreen and YV12 output/input

And if you think you need it and your CPU is fast enough for it then you can do alittle sharpening.

To late I just removed powerdvd. And divx codec.

I'm going to install dscaler, ac3filter, and ffdshow.

BTW I appreciate you helping me out with this. I have to say this is pretty complex, all this encoding/decoding/playing/etc. business. It's not a click on a box and everything works type of deal.

I noticed in your sig that you have an X-Fi soundcard.

I'd uninstall AC3Filter, then. Instead, enable DTS and Dolby Digital decoding in the X-Fi options, and just have your DVD software output through "S/PDIF" (it won't, setting it to that will let the X-Fi decode it, though). The hardware DTS and Dolby Digital encoder built into the X-Fi is better than AC3Filter can do...indeed, AC3Filter can't even *do* anything with DTS soundtracks, so you wouldn't hear anything with those, anyway.

I use both the NV codec and Dscaler regardless of the video card brand.

Is it just me, or is a LOT of quality lost in that "sharpening"? I mean, especially with the Austin Powers shot on the demo page...looks like the same effect as opening an image in Photoshop and setting running 'sharpen image' a few too many times. It's sharper, yes, but also terribly distorted.

Nope, no idea. The Austin Powers shot looks blurry as hell to me, the Monster Inc shows little improvement and both the LoTR and Star Wars ones are a noticable but subtly improvement but yeah the AP one is over sharpened a tad to me. Other then that I don't see this "quality lost" that you mention.

AC3 Filter was removed. Under the creative audio console, decoder tab, "Dolby Digital/DTS Bitstream Out" is enabled. Says it requires an external decoder yet DVDs still seem OK when I select this. Under media player classic, audio decoders, I have S/PDIF selected for AC3 Decoder settings and DTS decoder settings. Under overrides the only thing showing up there is the Dscaler video decoder.

I am using ffdshow to boost the volume for the audio.

Sounds like you've got something else doing the audio decoding, then.

You'd want the "bitstream out" DISABLED on the X-Fi to use the internal decoders.

That's odd. I'm not sure what else might be doing the decoding then. AC3 was removed from add/remove. MPEG audio is unchecked under Filters (media player classic) so the internal decoder shouldn't be active.

Well, ffdshow has an audio part that is able to decode DTS and AC3 sound. When working it shows in system tray as icon (white/blue one with FF letters). There you can check if it's doing any decoding
