hello,

I know this may seem like stupid question, Can I crossfire 5870 2gb card with my new 6970 2gb card? I know one is faster but Im just curious.

I think it's possble. But I don't know if it follows SLI rule that it will go at the slowest speed of the slowest video card ( I assume it is. But I never really tried it myself to be honest).
 
To my understanding, you can only crossfire cards of the same generation.

It was actually ATI that introduced that feature and they further improved upon SLI by letting you crossfire cards of the same generation even if they had less shaders. You can for example Crossfire a 6870 with a 6850. With Nvidia you can only SLI cards of the same model and number of shaders.

With CrossFire, you can combine any cards that use the same chipset. The 5870 is Cypress, the 6970 is Cayman, so no you can't do that. But you could use any 5800 or 6900 cards in tandem with themselves (even a 5870 + 5830 CrossFire, though it'd be a waste).

With SLI, you can only combine cards that have the same model and memory size.

Vendor doesn't make a difference for either company.
