Where in the control center are you able to OC and view the temperature of your card? I know with the ATITool I can view my temp and OC and i've seen pictures of it being done in the Control Center as well.

Help?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure CCC does not allow overclocking of the X800XL, only XT and XT PE

CCC doesn't allow me to overclock....I didn't find anything.
Anyway, I use ATITool, which is perfect. I only have one complaint; it doesn't detect the fan controller, so I can't control the fan.

When you tell the ATI tool to do the max core and mem what results do you get? Mine just keeps dropping and dropping until I stop it. I've only had the card 2 days but haven't seen any problems with it other than it runs a lot hotter than my old Nvidia 5900 Ultra (idle 50c load 75 - 78c. I ran 3dMark03 and 05 and got 11014 and 4987 respectively.

Does the core dropping with the auto OC mean I have a problem, does that mean the card doesn't run proeprly even at stock speeds?

The x800xl doesn't have a thermal sensor on-die so you wont get a reported temp.

And since when could you overclock via the Catalyst drivers on any card? If you want to overclock download ATITool.

The 800XL does have a thermal probe as the ATI Tool told me my temps. As far as not being able to OC using ATI drivers I did not know that as this is my first ATI card (GF2, GF3, GF4, GFFX) was my path before.

So any idea on my above post about the max clock and max mem going down . . . . . I dont' think the card is bad as I just played CS for about 2 hours with no problems.

Really? I didn't see anything mentioned about temps in the reviews i've looked over and i didn't see it in the Catalyst drivers so i didn't think the x800xl's had a temp probe.

I'll download ATITool and check it out myself.

EDIT: I found my answer here: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=31&threadid=1550359

the .23 version does not support it I had to get the beta .24 and it worked.

Any idea on the clocking down when I run the max core and mem test? If you have an XL and download the program can you try that and see what it does for you? I don't care if the card doesn't OC well but if it is messed up at stock I sure do.
