ATI Confirms Commitment to AGP Bus

Commitment to making money is more like it.
I doubt more than 10% of the market own a PCI Express rig.

One would suspect that Nvidia will follow suit.
ATI *has* to say that. nvidia already made an AGP bridge chip and has been shipping newer chip AGP cards.

I'll go PCI-E only if R520 is PCI-E only.

I just hope the bridge they use (if they do) doesn't get toasty like NVIDIAs. IMO I think thats why all the AGP 6600GTs are breaking.

If you are talking about the total market, and not just the geek market, that's a low number. Dell and the other big volume box builders have been PCIe only on their Intel systems since last summer. The market turns over at roughly 33% a year and January is history, so roughly half a year of Intel's share of that market is a bigger number than 2%. It's probably more along the lines of 12%-15% of the market after the Chrismas season.

The real point though is the OEM market is going to be very close to 100% PCIe from here on out. There will be some AGP products around for some time, just as there are still PCI video cards if you look hard enough, but the high end cards will be PCIe only after 2005 IMO.

I don't think it's just a meager 2%. I work as a service tech at a local shop and alot of the retail machines are comming with PCI-Express and have been for almost 6 months. Dell's been shipping PCI-E rigs for months as well. Probably 60% of the machines sold in the last 6 months or so have been PCI-Express. There have been more selling before that. Not as big a percentage to be sure.

The percentage of geek systems that are PCI-Express is probably alot greater than you think, especially with the A8N-SLi being so popular and a large percentage of the computers bought throughout the last year probably accounts for a larger percentage than 2% of the total market. But it is less than 10% to be sure.

High end solutions will be offered for the rest of this generation and possibly next generation, but I wouldn't count on anything past that. AGP is a dead end. Or it will be eventually. Just as PCI-E will one day be replaced with something better.

They are breaking because nVidia doesn't care about quality in any of its products. 6800s are garbage too. I wouldn't buy any nVidia card online, becasue I would count on returning it a few times before getting a "good one"

R520 will absolutly be in AGP. If you think otherwise, please state why so i can pwnz you.

Because when it is released pretty much only the enthusiast market will end up buying it, and most of the really hardcore people already have PCI-E rigs.

Woot!

This means that I can continue to upgrade my video for my gaming system, without having to buy a new mobo!

I say again...Woot!

I still don't see why manufacturers are flocking towards pci-express when barely half of AGP speed is being used. When AGP hits its limit or there is a generation of cards that will never be AGP, I'll switch.

ahhhhh shit. x800xl in AGP? Fuckin awesome!!! i'm selling my 6600gt the second i see one of these things on the market. I'm psyched!

But ATI will be able to create an AGP board with the help of Rialto for little cost, and they'll bring in a ton of money from the AGP market. They've obviously spent some cash on developing the Rialto technology, of course they're going to use it.

And my guess is, they will use it on the r520 (so called x950xt) when released, or shortly there after.

read: you don't trust nvidia based on vague BS you saw in some forum some time that supported your "ATI rules" agenda...my MSI 6600gt kicks ass...no problems. And I'm not really a lucky person so my trust statue w/ nvidia is high. Garbage? have you owned one? You said you wouldn't even buy one so how would you know? I got nothing against ATI (hell if i had a pci-express system I would've got a x700pro instead). So what really is ur beef man?

I don't think there's going to be an x950.....

Please explain why you think ATI isnt going to make better cards?

Personally, I am a believer that ATI has something awesome under it's sleeve that they've spent a long time working one, the reason that for there new lines, they used old tech (9700). So, behind the lines, they can make an uber card.

I for one can't wait for an R520, as well as X800XL AGP (this might be the "New" best bag for the buck card, IMO)

i think without a doubt. 16 pipes and under $300. Can't even come close right now.

I'm still waiting for good setups using PCIE for amd (and no, I don't call any of the NF4 series 'good', not after some experiences I've had). When that happens, I'll upgrade. Till then, my 6800GT is doing fine :)

Is pci-e a great improvement in speed, and bandwidth over current agp configurations

...well I dunno about everyone else, but mine has worked great since day one...every card I've ever owned from nvidia worked great...

what are you basing this comment on? anything?

I'm sort of in the same school of thought...

I'm happy for now, so there's no rush.

Man STFU. NV doesn't actually MAKE the stuff, that's just their reference. Its the manufacturers that are making crappy cards, like XFX makin all those crappy 6600GT heatsinks that didn't work well enough. I haven't heard many bad things about BFG and I'm guessin that's why they are so popular now. Why? because they build higher quality cards than other manufacturers. I'd stay away from PNY cards. They are like the ECS of graphics cards. I'm an ATI fan-boi <--(haha auto correct turns this into !!!!!), but I'm not going to stand for some outrageous shit that makes us look bad. My friend has a 6800GT and he hasn't had any problems with it. Likewise I know a bunch of people with X800XTs and XTPE's that haven't had any problems with theirs. Take your trolling somewhere else.

Why dont they make the cards themselves, whats going on with that
I like my ProLink 5200Fx

Trick is ya gotta sell your 6800 GTs now why they can still demand a price in the mid 300s. Once the XL's hit the market Nvidia will have no choice but to slash the 6800 GT to around the same price (or lose all the market share it had gained over the past few months). And that means your used card depreciates $100 almost instaneously. If you have a halfway decent backup card and pay your own bills, the wise decision is sell that old GT now.

Not necessarily. The 6800GT has already won a name for itself in the market, and the x800xl is fast but not as fast as the 6800GT, and still doesn't have SM3.0 or OpenEXR HDR - or SLI on the PCI Express side - the 6800GT is still definitely the superior card. Nvidia can still charge more for it, and even if they slash the price they really don't have to do so more than $50. Any money you made selling the 6800GT would not be worth the hassle of selling it, and if you went 6800GT -> X800XL it would be a downgrade. So the smartest thing for 6800GT owners to do is to hold onto their cards.

And this is all assuming ATI can actually put agp x800xl cards out in mass quantities for an extended period of time ,which is yet to be seen.

One thing i find funny. People using SM3.0 under FP16 and HDR as these things Nvidia has over ATI. First of all, HDR is completely useless, degrades performance too much to actually use in a game, and SM3.0, wheres the advantage? In anything?

well as you can see ... there was a reason to why ATi did not include those so called advantages since they WILL degrade performance. Although the X800 XT PE is a powerful card the use of SM3.0 will only hinder it's performance. ATi users are more than satisfied with sm2.0b ... name 1 ATi user who has an X800 or X850 card who wishes he had SM3.0 over 2.0b .. it's totally useless .. the visual difference is almost negligable ... And ATi users can use HDR if it was an option ... I can enable it in The Project Cry tek demo

it's like chrome on a racing car ... yes it looks all good and flashy but it's soo heavy it will slow you down.

Oh come now, I mean SM3.0 has showed up in EVERYTHING! I mean, it's in Far Cry and um... Far Cry gives a boost in preformance... and... um...

Oh wait, I forgot, SM3.0 has all but been forgotten by game developers for now. Ok, yes, the 6800 and 6600's both have VERY nice features. But at the moment, that's all they are, features.

No reason to get defensive about the 6800GT's, as they are being challenged by the X800XL's for market share. The point is this: the X800XL's aren't meant to challenge the 6800GT's, theya re meant to challenge the 6800NU's. And, as it as been shown, the X800XL's DOMINANTE them in terms of price-preformance ratio. This is expected, as the card is newer.

But, for simple suggested MSRP price comparisons, the 6800NU is 299$, as is the X800XL. The 6800GT is meant to compete with the X800pro (At least I think the X800pro is still the competing card at that price point), and the 6800GT pretty much hands that card it's bum. (Given, both cards are fucking amazing, and I'd love to have EITHER.)

Not much more than that. Features are features, but to tell you the truth, I don't care about SM3.0, as it is not the NORM for games today. It is used, sure, I'll give you that, but until it becomes the standard, I won't care about ATi not using it at all in their GFX cards. And I believe that's what more ATi users (insert random slur about liking ATi) will most likely try to tell you. (among slurs of random insults.)

So if this is true, does this mean dell will get an x800go agp for the XPS GEN1 cause that would be awesome?
