Anyone heard of any rumored date when the official Cat 4.8s come out?

They'll get here when they get here. There's still a lot of buzz about the 4.9beta's since they have Doom3 optimizations. Those that have the 4.9beta's (myself included) won't likely change to the 4.8's while still playing Doom3 (just my theory anyways).

You know, I've read that all you have to do is extract the atioglxx.dll file into the game's directory and it will use that automatically rather than the one that came with the drivers. This supposedly gives you 4.9 functionality even if you have older drivers so you can avoid issues with other games. Personally, I just extracted all of the drivers files into the main doom3 and doom3/base directories, just to be 100% sure. I thought that Doom3 used Direct3D, so that's why I just copied all those files. Well, I didn't test TOO extensively, but it seems like it's doing better. Never was ultra-fast on this thing, so I didn't expect much improvement, really more of a stabilizing, and it seems to have done that some. I'm too lazy to test before and after. ^_^

If this works the way it is supposed to, you could still go to official (or omega) 4.8 while keeping performance in Doom3 good.

I can't help but wonder if ATI won't go out of it's way to put the Doom3 performance improvement in whatever driver version they put out next though. I realize this could cause confusion, but, it works better for them (stock-wise) if official drivers work better with something like Doom 3. Their cards sell better if they promise better performance on such a thing. d-:

EDIT: Yeah, I extracted and then used expand to manually expand them. I couldn't help but laugh out loud when I saw it say "size increased by 91%." Lol. What idiots decided to compress even when the compression headers and stuff end up adding more to the size of the file than you lost by compressing. ^_^ I use an edit because I don't want to bother everyone with another post just to say that I did do that.

In fact, I expanded all the files in the driver directory to a C:\ATI_BETA so I can easily copy and paste them into any game folder I should want. This way I can stick with the latest official unofficial drivers. d-:

I made a thread on this here. Make sure to expand the file if you extracted it straight from WinRAR.
