Just installed a new Radeon HD4650 in my studio rig (I have two different PC's, one that I use for Gaming,Web Browsing, Movies, etc etc, so it has my high-end components, and my Studio Rig, I use for my home recording studio, but I also play some games on it once in awhile) and I've been using Nvidia for the last 5yrs so I'm not familiar with the Catalyst Control Center, and the different ATI/Catalyst Features. I came Across an option for Catalyst AI, and I wasn't exactly sure what it is, or what it does, at default its enabled and set at standard, so I wanted to find out what exactly it does...
 
I think it's there mainly for improvements in crossfire. However i always used to have it disabled as it crashed my 4870.
 
It's the part of the driver that contains certain conditional performance enhancements and bug fixes. It "looks" at what a game or 3d app is doing and applies them accordingly. Standard is where it should generally be. Advanced gets way too aggressive and can sometimes cause issues. OFF is basically a troubleshooting mode, only use it if your game is having issues and you think that the optimizations are to blame. In the latest drivers for the 6xxx series cards (not sure if it applies to the 4xxx and 5xxx) there's a seperate "disable surface optimizations" box which lets you disable a minor performance enhancing feature that may reduce image quality if you're REALLY looking for it, without disabling all the other fixes and optimizations that are invisible to the user.
 
ok, now that I know what that is, I had another question, as far as OC'ing my Card, I noticed some options in the CCC, should I use these, are they any good, or is there another app that would be good for OC'ing ATI cards ? I'm still new to the OC'ing world, I've gotten pretty good at doing it with my CPU, but I'm still learning when it comes to Video Cards and RAM, the RAM is the most confusing one to OC, for me....
 
CCC is limited when it comes to OCing, most cards will be able to hit the max clocks on the sliders. You can use MSI afterburner to get them higher, but I wouldn't worry about getting it much higher, as it won't give a huge boost.
