ATI Catalyst 5.8 released

has anyone else opened task manager and just watched the cli.exe's jump around on the cpu usage? mine have ranged from 0% to 15%, and they constantly fluctuate, ever second or so. They may not use much memory any more...but damn, that kind of fluctuating cpu usage is uncalled for especially when the system is idle. If it does that crap when Idle, I sure as hell don't want that crap running when I play games!

btw, I've noticed this with a fresh install of windows and with all the driver versions with CCC.

Don't use CCC then.

smartass comments aren't necessary. I don't use ccc, I was asking if anyone else noticed those weird cpu usage fluctuations.

It wasn't meant to be. I'm just saying that if you use CCC and it's giving you problems, then don't use it. :)

hehe...ok..but have you used ccc and noticed that? I'm wondering if it's supposed to be normal... because if so...ATI has a twisted sense of normal... :p

That's what I was thinking, but I run driver cleaner everytime! Should I reinstall and run it again or something?

just reinstall every thing i tried plug and play but my xt was performing worse than my xl so yea run driver cleaner

So what would be the best to download the driver obviously and then what else? I was told to download driver only and then get something seperate.

Get the driver only and then either ATI Tray Tools or ATI Control Panel (if possible to get CP separately). ATI Tray Tools is nice, but no one seems to know much about all the settings yet. I'm sticking with ATT just because I don't feel like uninstalling again, but if you don't want something complicated with a bunch of settings then try and get CP separately.

Whats so confusing about cp? I don't understand why they are letting out so confusing

Then again, just to make it not so confusing just install the CP version of the Catalyst 5.8s and be done with it. No driver only versions or trying to find CP separate.

edit: scratch that, there is a separate CP so use that.

Is there anywhere on the system settings or anywhere on the system or within any software that actually says that you have the "5.8 catalyst drivers" or "5.8 drivers" installed? I know it says the driver date and different number sequences for the driver version depending on where you look, but I can't seem to find 5.8 anywhere.

Since I switched from Cat 5.6 to 5.8 my system seems to spontaneously reboot. Go figure. I tried the 5.7's and the same thing is happening as well.

I run DH Driver Cleaner between each installs. If it happens again I'll go back to 5.6 :(

5.8s making your card run harder/ using more voltage by chance? Can your ps take it?

does it really ? any one vouch for this?.this is important to me becuase im so paranoid that 5.7 was running my bf2 smoother and this 5.8 is like crapping out all over the place but maybe its my imagination

just curious if these are made for working with Windows 64bit? Or are they just for normal XP etc?

Glow, you can download the 64 bit version at guru3d.com.

Damn, I get the strangest problems. I reinstalled, cleaned, etc, all the standard methods of making my game run better, but I still get FPS drops in areas where a large number of models are present, market in Italy, spawns, but I never got this problem before. I've tried different drivers but they all yield the same results.

I never had PS problems per se. Running a 485Watts Enermax Noisetaker. . .

edit: Well, I seem to have fixed it. Played around with my very mild OC and the problem has disappeared. Go figure.

Is any driver better than Cats 4.12 for HL2?

i'd also like to know this

i think the 4.12's are the best for my 9800pro

i just tried the 5.8's and it seems a bit slower

I was just going to tell you that my AquaMark3 ran fine and I got a score of 43,516 on my XP machine, but after I left AquaMark the desktop had a bunch of bright messed up colors and I had to reboot to get rid of it. There is definitely something going on with the 5.8 catalyst drivers and AquaMark3 it seems for both ATI and nVidia cards. Um, now the next question is why umbra is running the 5.8 drivers with a 6600GT card? ;)

I'm sticking with the drivers though; I ran the test and I'm done running benchmarks with these drivers. Also, just about the only thing I had running with the test was ATI Tray Tools.

quickey question... i CTD most of the time while using my powercolor x800xl... or sometimes my speakers will start poping and screeching... i think it's my sound card.. but will this drivers update remedie some of my BF2 problems?

btw, these things happen at random times....

try with out the sound card for awhile (take it out, disable it, whatever it takes) and see if that solves your ctd problems.

As for these drivers, they did fix some texture problems in BF2 for me. Other than that, I didn't notice a difference.
