ATI card problems

Last year I bought a ATI All in Wonder 9000. I liked the TV features, but it had problems in some games. Like Comanche 4 it would lock up constantly. A few others too. So I returned it and bought a GeForce 4600ti. It has been great for almost 2 years. Now I want to upgrade again.
This time I bought a All in Wonder 9800. I removed the Nvidia drivers and installed it. I also got the latest for ATI. Now I have problems again running 3D mark 03 and BF1942. It either reboots or goes to a black screen. So I took it out and brought it back, and went back to my 4600ti.
I really want a DX9 compatable card, and all the reviews make the Radeon look like the best choice. Anybody else have good or bad results with ATI cards?

Mike

Despite the improvements in ATI drivers they're still not what i'd expect when paying loads of money for new hardware.

Theres been a fair bit of shuffeling around with ATI drivers recently as i understand it, a few versions back everyone was scared to use a certain driver as cards were overheating and dieing. Looking from one driver release to another it seems that a lot of bugs still remain, check benchmarks which offer quality aswell as speed comparisons between drivers recently and you'll see the same complaints come up time and time again, nothing i PERSONALLY would put up with.

Most people seem to run their radeons fine except for the occasional bluder, usualy fixable with custom drivers, if you want to go with ATI i'd almost definatly look up alternative drivers, like the omegas or whatever they are, they sound a lot better.

I personally own a 5900Ultra, part of the choice of getting one rather than a radeon was definatly drivers, i dont have high tolerance for that kinda thing, thats just a personal preference though, i feel that and other benefits are worth a few fps lower than the faster cards.

I have a Radeon 9700np on my main gaming rig. I also use ATI's 3.10 drivers, and I don't have any problems with the games I play.

It seems the AIW cards have more problems, though.

And here we go again... Honestly I would like to see ONE thread of you not flaming. You are not helping anyone...In addition you claim you don't have any tolerance for "bad" drivers, yet you have to wait till Nvidia makes "optimizations" in order to play games with decent frames...I wouldn't be running your mouth off like that (stop and think before you post)...

You didn't answer his question, and you CAN'T because you don't have an ATi card. So stop trolling. Honestly how you haven't been banned yet is beyond me...

Now to help you Mike...If you are having issues with drivers/games I would recommend that you use Cat's 3.7, they seem to work for everyone (although, if you can try to use Cat 3.10, its no big deal if you can't). I, myself am currently running Cat 3.10 and have no problems, and I enjoy my card. I know computer hardware can be tuff sometimes, but ATi is getting better and better with every new driver release...

My games run fine, i have the brains to take into consideration overclocking when i buy my hardware, any difference in overall frame rate is slight, not enough to worry about. As i stated several times through my post, it was my opinion, and no i dont have an ATI card, but i keep up with the hardware scene and i know of the many many problems ATI users have, some people are lucky and get away with out many problems.

These are forums, here for people to express their opinions, i expressed mine in a none agressive way, there no problem here, other than you dont agree with me, and for that you want me banned, pretty lame really.

I thought his response was pretty good. I didn't think he was trolling at all.

It seems you tried to pick a fight. He is entitled to his opinion, which by the way was a very thought out and civilized one.

Don't pick fights. Your new to the forums I see. Be careful when criticizing people's posts in a bad way... especially if you hope to be taken seriously in the future.

Anway. I would agree with getting some custom drivers. I switched to Omega drivers after Cat 3.8 came out. Have had no problems since (other than my brightness prob... check posts). My 9800 Pro has treated me very well. Good luck with your decision.

People are so convinved of themselfs that anyone going against them HAS to be wrong and therefore baiting/trolling.

My response as stated was largly MY opinion, and you claim that i cant give my opinion on something because i dont have it, it doesnt make sense. If you dont like me or my opinions then by all means put me on ignore if thats what you ACTUALLY want, thats what its there for, i wont even know, and even if i did i wouldnt take any offence, chill out.

But he wasn't asking your opinion Frosty, he was asking a opinion of a ATi owner...

Anybody else have good or bad results with ATI cards?

You haven't had any results with them...

You joined the forums a month before I did, and just because I don't post, doesn't mean I don't read posts. And I am tired of reading Frosty's posts, specially when he isn't helping the thread starter...

Don't listen to Frosty's incoherent banter. Seems I'm the only one who has anything intelligent to offer to this thread.

If anything, it sounds like you have some leftover nVidia drivers on your PC. Try Driver Cleaner at this link. That SHOULD fix your issue. If not, let us know and we can try a different approach.

He wasn't trolling. Because you love ATI and get offended by people's opinion about a piece of PCB doesn't mean it's trolling.
It means you have to stop whining.

I have an 9800Pro and have had some minor issues with certain games with the 3.8, 3.9, and 3.10 set myself which isn't due to leftover Nvidia drivers since the 9800Pro was the only card ever in that rig. I stick with the 3.7 set for now.

I agree that you should make sure all of your Nvidia drivers are wiped from your system. Personally I use driver cleaner 2. Read the directions.

dont get an AIW card if you're more concered with gaming. If you want all the video options, use an older AIW card on ANOTHER video computer.

For gaming, get a gaming card. ie 9800pro 9800xt.

Im running a 9500pro and I've yet to lag in ANY game I play.

If its not trolling, why even post to a thread with so much text, offering no help? Just saying his card works fine

As said before, try removing old driver entries and reinstall your card drivers.

theNoid, the 9800 Pro and 9800 Pro AIW get the exact same FPS. I have no idea why you said to not get a AIW if you play games, thats just silly talk. They're the same speed.

On average, AIW cards don't OC nearly as well.

Ok guys drop it. You hijacked this thread for a pointless discussion. Enough for god's sake...
