how do these companies come out with cards very close in performance every product cycle? how do they predict how fast the other companies card is going to be?

im just suprised someone hasnt dropped the bomb with a card the other company no way could touch. or do they have these highend cards hidden away and wait to see what there competition does then down grades that card?

Seems pretty simple to me...
Their base technology is the same....manufacturing processes and stuff. All they have to do is wait or spy on the other to see how much power they're planning to offer per dollar, and match it with the same technology, only in their own personal flavor.

just like any other technology, instead of and elevator going strait to the top, they make more money by selling you ramps to the top instead.. so thats why you dont seem em make something with like 2gig of ram and a 700mhz core or whatever(just and example)

they probably use alot of the same technology to make and design the cards, so chances for large differences in performance get smaller and smaller.

good example, gddr3.

i was gonna say...manufacturing processes etc..

you are limited by the technology that is available to you, how many transistors you can cram into a die etc, how big your packaging is etc... you are limited by current manufacturing processes, which are close to the same for each company

some differences excist though, like ati has low-k at .13u and nvidia currently does not

both are playing with .11u

memory used is the same, GDDR3, bus width is expensive, a 512-bit memory bus isn't practical yet

cost is most important

ATI and NVIDIA are currently at the top of the playing field using the latest stuff at such extreme speeds.

Other companies can't keep up, S3, Volari, Kyro etc... they all tried, but couldn't quite compete.

heh remember the s3 savage, prolly the best card and the last card they ever put out... it ran my old quake 3 beautifully though- feels funny calling q3 old, man time flies

my friend had a savage and never could get that card to perform decently.

i wish matrox would get caught up to nvidia and ati now.
