High end card prices have been at the $500 mark since the geforce2 ultra. It costs a lot of money to develop these chips, and the market seems to be perfectly happy paying $500 for the latest and greatest. And the reason cards are always roughly the same prices between the two companies is because they are in direct competition with one another...so naturally they try to price their cards about the same...
With as fast as card prices drop, I fail to see how any price fixing could be going on. The graphics card market seems to be quite healthy, lots of competition, ruthless production cycles, constantly falling prices...
