Hi guys, I have spare parts around, going to make another work/secondary gamer PC. Problem is I have a Ti4200 and a Radeon 9700 sitting around. I am a newbie linux user, not even one at all yet actually and don't want too many problems. I'm going to be going dual boot. I mean, surely ATi's linux drivers can handle 2d in linux fine?! Of course the point here is it is all too simple to go nV instead but in the windows environment my 9700 would surely fit the bill much better.

Worth the potential headache? I assumed 2d is fine but you do hear of Ati's problems on the linux front a lot. Don't know how many are actually trying to game in linux anyway.

Leaning towardds Red Hat9 if it makes a difference. Dual boot - Ti4200 OR Radeon9700???
 
well the ATi will give ya headaches with driver installation, but its better for your windows gaming. Do you do a lot of Linux gaming or anything that uses 3d in Linux?
 
go with the ATI my 9600Pro was really great in Red Hat...
 
ATI can't do 3d linux gaming, period. If all you are going to do is 2d stuff in linux, then the ATI is the better choice.

Sure it can. Takes 10 hours to get working, but you can convince it to work, if you want to invest the time and energy. Is it worth it? Hell no, but it ~can~ be done :p

Not to sound like an Nvidia proponent, but this post is the truth (or very very close). Unfortunately for ATI their driver support for linux is lacking. Not to mention, people who have finished products for 3dgaming in linux using ATI stuff has serious performance hits.

If you dont plan to game, slap in an ATI card. If you want to game, use an Nvidia card, take the slight hardware performance hit to try it out.

However, the simple fact of it is, Do what works BEST for YOU. I'd encourage everyone to expand and try out 3d games for linux.
