ATi and a question on reliability

I heard a rumour from a friend today when I stated my intention to buy a ATi card, torn between a 1900gt and xt but anyway.
He said that all games he had gotten over the last year or so had had problems with ATi cards in most patchnotes.

What are these problems? or do they acctually exist?

I'm only intrested in if there is problems with games out of the box and ATi hardware and if they are of the kind that makes games unplayable.

I've played most recent games. HL2, HL2:Ep1, Prey, DOOM3, QUAKE4, EQ2, F.E.A.R, Oblivion, AOEIII, MxO, SW:Battlefront 1 and 2, and a whole lot more......I have a X1900XTX. I don't have an issue with playing games out of the box or even after patching games (which you should patch games reguardless of hardware with the latest patches anyway in my opinion to keep game current).

My best friend runs Crossfire X1600XT's and he doesn't have issues. *shrug*


Nvidia's reliability is no different that ATI's. It's all about preference and how many friends you can sweet talk into seeing that your opinion is better about (insert fav card chip maker brand here) verses the shiity chips that (insert hated card chip maker brand here) makes and see if your friends join your bandwagon.

I just went from a long stretch of playing games with Nvidia cards only to an ATi CrossFire rig and there hasn't been a single issue with any of the games I play... BF2, FEAR, Oblivion, GuildWars, Doom3 + mods, Quake4 + mods, HL2, CoD2 and Prey... all run just fine!

I've mainly only had issues with Oblivion. I reported the issue, so we'll see if that gets fixed promptly. It is a serious problem, however, and one that ATi has not yet documented.

nVidia has issues with certain games as well. Perfection is impossible. For the most part, the games that do have underlying issues are fairly old and in some cases developers are to be blamed (because, in my opinion, most current developers are horrendously lazy).

it depends on alot of factors ... one big one is : stability . To be honest both ATI and Nvidia make great cards ..and both have strong points . In the end for me i prefer ATI cause i have used them for a long time and like to support the bussiness. I hope with AMD taking them over they dont completely screw up the ATI brand its-self ..i dont mind if they lose ATI name but as long as the people that make the boards are still there i am not worried about the future. Nvidia on the other hand seems to be wanting to branch out into different markets and not so much video cards per-say anymore. That kind of worries me cause i want Nvidia in the video card bussiness cause they push technology and make companys like ATI (or whatever AMD has named them) push them-selfs harder and it ends up benefiting gamers like me alot.
