Hi! I have been off the video card market for many years now. My 8800 GTX still let me pretty much max out every title at the resolutions I game with. However investing in a 3D monitor I wonder if ATI have any plans delivering 3d software for todays true 120 hz 3D monitors? Looking at ATIs homepage I find nothing about 3D so are you still locked on nVidia?
 
I don't know why someone would get an awesome 120Hz monitor giving you access to all those extra frames and then cut it back down to half with a set of goggles stuck to your face...


But yeah, on the box for my 6950 it mentions some 3D stuff.
 
Do they do 3D? Yes
Would I recommend it? No
Will it improve in the future? Probably.


AMD's 3D is there, but it is pretty lame. I wouldn't invest in a 3D monitor for AMD 3D if you haven't already, I don't think it's worth the money.
 
It's a fair bet that it will appear this year. I'm holding off on 3D until there is some competition. $200 for Nvidia glasses = forget it.
 
It's already out there, it's just naff. I'm hoping they improve it considerably. I've no real interest in 3D as 30" monitors don't support it [and even if they did I'm not paying a grand for another screen just for 3D!] but it should make the 3D gaming area a little more of an even playing field.

From what I understand, AMD is using 3rd party companies like Bit Cauldron and IZ3D to develop and support the tech where nVidia does it all in house (more or less).

If you plan on investing in a 3D gaming setup, I would highly suggest going nvidia just for the support alone. They've been doing 3D gaming on PC's going back to the CRT days... they have great driver support as well as a long list of compatible titles. They also work with developers to include optimized support for 3Dvision... something that will probably be hit or miss on other solutions.

Just some food for thought. A while ago I was interested in one of iz3ds 3D monitors, but in the end, the nvidia solution seemed like a better investment.

what makes you think AMD's solution will not cost as well? nVidia dominates 3d stereo gaming, period.

I take it you're not familiar with the basics of economics. Competition drives down prices; monopoly leads to increased prices.
 
ATI does generally price equal stuff lower as well.

The question that remains is, will it be equal?
 
Who cares. 3D's just a fad. Pure 2d image quality, contrast, accurate colour, black levels is where it's at. I'd skip 3d all together and wait for holograms.

If you really want to do 3d now, it'll cost you. The issue of Nvidia's glasses price has already been mentione. Plus, I'm willing to bet the 120hz monitor isn't going to have the same image quality as a normal 60hz monitor in the same price range.

But that could just be me. I've not bought into the whole touchscreen thing either. Sticking resolutely with my Nokia N86 atm.

To be honest, having 120hz far outweighs the benefits of the extra picture quality on better 60hz panels mainly because of their size.

Being able to disable VSync and not get tearing is a huge boost. Feels like a huge performance increase for sure.
 
To get back I ended investing in nVidias 3Dvision. As for price it´s inline with what the TV solutions cost and also inline with what my edimensional stereo3D glasses cost. Though those was a bit cheaper but then there has been a lot of inflation since that era :).

Happy to report it work at least as well as it did during the CRT era. Sure the monitors can´t compete with the Trinitron monitors I used at that time but the 3D effect is just as good if not better. I know it would work well for my simulations but surprised I actually find it useful for movies. Particularly animated movies is a total joy in 3D.

As long as you enjoy is all that matters right :D

I thought it would be pretty cool to be able to have an eyefinity setup with 3D monitors. Not quite sure how that would work, but hey thats for AMD and nVidia to sort out :D

For games yes. For everything else ..HELL NO. The drop in PQ is minor when your gaming for the most part. Games are by nature bright and colorful so you don't really notice the bigger drop in PQ.

But if you don't game then 120hz PC monitors are a waste.
 
I tried a 120hz monitor because I thought things would be smoother, honestly I did not notice much difference and when my frames went below 120 I would stutter in black ops.

I've heard nothing but great things with Nvidias 3D options. I haven't seen anybody rave about ATI/AMD 3D. I don't even know if it's implemented yet or it's going to be enabled in a future driver. If you're going the 3D monitor route right now, then go with Nvidia.
