ATI & AMD - dying?

ati/amd wont die, because that would cause a monopoly in the market. The gov't will keep amd/ati in market, to prevent it.

The gov't will buy all their products and disperse them across the world on a first come first serve basis of free.

i think the government has other problems to deal with first, kinda like the recession its in right now.

Im sittin in an MCP class right now (for the cert nothing more) and the instructor tried telling me that Cross Fire is dead....yeah...I guess they just invented CrossFireX to waste more money on "dead" technology.

I've been shopping looking to make the switch to the Q6600, but I'm a fan of the underdog. I've owned plenty of AMD based PCs and all of them have been stable as hell. Remember - bigger the company, the more prone to QC problems. Look at the B3 vs. G0 stepping and how many people are not only p!ssed they are stuck with an inferior revision, but they have to take a chance at online retailers sending them the "better" chip.

Trust me - AMD is in it for a while and they'll oust the giant again before long :)

I have never owned an nvidia card (honestly every time i wanted to upgrade ati had a better product, and i got a super deal on the 3870's) and i hadn't owned an intel processor since the horrible peice of shit that was my pentium3. but i got a G0 easily its not hard, most people dont have b3 steppings anymore (in retail) only OEMs have B3 steppings and even they are probably almost out of them

I agree. I'm down with the underdog but only with ATI. I had an 8800GT b4 but I prefer the cooling apparatus, low power comsumption and Image Quality of my 3870 Toxic Edition over performance anyday. Plus the Catalyst drivers are much more stable. As far as your comparison with the B3vs G0 is well said but also take into account the issue AMD had with its Phenom series and the TL3 errata bug. Now they have a revised version 9x50 and Im pretty sure the owners of the 9x00 series are pretty pissed they have the older version with the bug. So issues happen on both sides. I hope a better funded electronics Giant (*cough*cough*Samsung*cough) would buy out AMD and fund them up to par with Intel so they can really have a contender. Its jus unfortunate that AMD/ATI lack the R&D funding of Intel/Nvidia. I think this maybe the very reason why they cannot compete on the higher end, not too mention they have to lay off staff to stay within budget. If AMD can get in bed with a more wealthy investor then the tides will really turn. All AMD has to ride off at the moment is letting Intel and Nvidia go at it to alleviate some competition from themselves. And eventually when the dust clears they will have the funds to get back on top. Heck its so bad with Intel and Nvidia that Intel is promoting Crossfire with Nahalem and leaving Nvidia out in the cold lol.

The gov't will buy pizza for everyone and disperse it across the world.

edit:

To keep it on topic, I don't think it is dying. The competition between Intel/AMD will always be there, and with that competition they will strive to make better products? Unless they get lazy.

What most people on this forum don't realize...

Enthusiast sector = less than 1% of most company's revenue stream. nVIDIA can have the performance crown for ages, but performance != sales.

According to trends we should see an AMD resurgence at about 2010-2011:

You don't need to always be #1 in a two-man game to survive as a business.

Like others have said, enthusiast sector is like 1% of market. They do plenty of business elsewhere...like in every xbox 360 sold.

When it comes right down to it, the fight between AMD and Intel and AMD and nVidia is basically about execution. When they execute well, they do well. Unfortunately for AMD they needed to execute like they were three years for a solid decade to be a solid company.

Can AMD really fail? In that it would leave Intel all alone and the only one that wants that is Intel and its shareholders. Just start executing! Easier said than done unfortunately.

But I have to give credit where credit is due. The G80 and the Core are absolutely remarkable. There's just no way I could go with an AMD platform against that technology. And I wasn't alone.
