First thing I would like to say is, ATI's stock cooling is shit!

I was sooo happy, I finally got my 9800 Pro, then disaster struck!

<evilmusic>dum dum dumm!!!!</evilmusic>

The smell of burning thermal paste and PCB quickly filled my room.. the screen flickered, then went pitch black.....

this sounds more like a horror movie, lol

I quickly power off my system and find that the cooling on the Radeon 9800 Pro was no better than cooling it with a tin can and blowing it with a straw...

Took off the heatsink, and the thermal paste was all yellow, burnt. ATI gave me faulty cooling.

I was doing this last night, and im currently using my video card with an intel cooler strapped on the die.

ATI'S COOLING IS INSUFFICIENT

Im going to e-mail them this and see what they say...

3dmark tests, I get roughly ~21000 in 03, ~6050 in 03, and ~47000 in aquamark 03, with a cpu running @ 3.45GHz

case temps rose 5c, and cpu temp, 4c.

im going to get an ATI Silencer with the exaust that goes outside the case, and im going to duct it up the back to the top of the case.

can someone give the link to the proper ATI Silencer for the 9800 Pro?

I was also lucky in this...

Yeah, ATI's cooling sucks soo hard that I hit crazy overclocks with my 9500Pro and 9800Pro

it probably was that the hit sink or shim which might have been out of place.

Dude... the thermal paste on 9800pro's _IS_ yellow.

But yes the paste sucks, I always replace it with AS3. Scrape the yellow off with cutup creditcard, use isopropyl alcohol to clean it off core/heatsink then apply translucent-thin coat of AS3 to core.

The stock 9800pro cooler is fine for stock speed settings.

I put AS5 on it too... after the first stuff went up in flames, lol...

it was not yellow to begin with, they put on the paste soo sloppy that some oozed onto the top of the chip, and it was white, not yellow, the paste burned up.
