Ok, so I have a Pentium 4, 2.53 ghz computer w/ 512 MB of RAM and 120 gig hard drive. The problem? It's got a 64 MB Nvidia GeForce 4 MX420 graphics card and I want to play Doom 3 and HL2 decently on my computer. And I read the benchmarks and the info on how Doom 3 will give you a "great gaming experience" on any computer, but come on...I know that can't be full-heartedly true. So, my question is this - the 6800 GT runs Doom 3 wonderfully for $400. A pretty steep price, considering I'm not sure how well it's going to run HL2. Now, the ATI 9800 Radeon Pro is only $229 with a $50 rebate at Best Buy, and I guess that ATI's cards are the "preferred cards" for HL2 just like nVidia's GeForce cards are the "preferred cards" for Doom 3. Which do you guys think is the better offer? I just think it's merely a matter of how much I am willing to drop on a card. And I guess it's ultimately my decision. I am just curious to see what you guys would buy.

doom 3 will run fine on any video card. just depends how much detail you want.

honestly, either choice is fine in my opinion. 9800pro has it's perks because it's cheaper and more readily available. but, it's not as powerful as the 6800gt. however, i don't know how intel's cpu speeds are compared to amd's but, i've concluded that unless you have super high end cpu you GPU isn't used to full potential.

if you can afford a 6800GT then do it...itll be awhile before any games will be too advanced for it.....but if you cant then a 9800pro should play d3 and hl2 in 1024x768. with maybe a 4xaf possibly 2xaa....not sure bout that but itll definitly play at 1024x768...a pretty good resolution IMO....now about ati being for hl2....tests done on the alpha show both the 6800 and the x800 being cpu limited...so it wont be like d3s trouncing of ati......it IS just an alpha however and things could change REALLY quickly but you can expect similar in the final game

right now... if I were to buy a card, I would be contemplating whether to buy the vanilla 6800 or the 9800 pro...

I guess it just comes down to how much $$$ you wanna spend. Both those cards have great bang for your buck for under 300 bucks...
