Are these suckers notoriously hot and need an add-on hsf? I keep getting random system reboots in games, about once a day. This is a very well ventilated system (4x80mm intake, slot fan exhaust, and 2x80mm exhaust). The hottest it gets is 98F case, 120F cpu. The exhaust from the slot fan (below the vid card, not too close to it) feels much warmer than the 5700 Ultra it replaced.

No oc has been applied to the card. System as follows:

P4 2.6c @ 3.41 gHz
Asus P4C800 Deluxe
Audigy 2
WD Raptor 36gb
1 gb HyperX 3500
500 watt Aspire ps
 
And you didn't have this problem with the 5700Ultra?
The stock cooling isn't that bad, I've been running with the same OC for almost a year.
Try running with the side of the case off, it should lower the temps and possibly rule out a heat issue.
 
No problems with any vid cards the system has had...5700 Ultra, 9600XT, and a TI500.
I did have to RMA this card last month from ATI. The first one took an extreme dump; corrupted 2d video. Like I said the exhaust from the slot fan is much warmer than I expected, even at idle...strange.

I was hoping to see if this was a characteristic of the card, running hot. I have a Crystal Orb I could put on it, but the s.o.b. is loud and whiney.

Good idea on the open case...I guess it's possible, even with the relatively low case temps reported by MBM.
 
My 9800pro doesnt run too hot, and I have mine massivly overclocked on air..of course because of my case its got 2 120mm fans blowing ontop of the cpu/video card section so it lowers temps all around.
 
you sure its the card and not bad drivers or something?, my 9800 ran fine in my last box with very little air ventilation (case got up to 34c), stock cooling of course.
 
Stock ATI cats...maybe I'll try the drivercleaner proggie and reinstall.
 
You should plug the radeon 9800 power connector by itself. Do not connect fans or other devices with the radeon 9800pro.

I had the same issue. My system would just shut down by itself or just blue screen sometimes.
 
Thanks, Marv...that sounds like a possibility. The 500w Aspire ps I have only has 2 strands of three 4 pin Molex connectors...lots of lights, drives etc being split off of those...hrmm...time for one of those modular ps units maybe...

I did go ahead and use the drivercleaner utility and reinstalled ATI cats...we'll see.
