I've been having a problem as of late, dealing with the ATI Radeon 9600XT 128mb version.

Right now, I'm using the old Catalyst drivers, 3.9. And I keep having VPU Recovery's, in which the screen will go black, (In games or in desktop for no appearant reason) and will pop up with a thing saying 'Send or Don't send error report to ATI'. I usually select No nowadays because I get get it at least 4 times a day, more if I'm playing an intense game or not.

Does anyone else have this problem? If so, have you fixed it, or do you recommend I simply send the card into ATI and request a new one? Is my motherboard terrible so I have a bad AGP slot? Does the card have a history of this problem?

I seem to have not read anything anywhere about this problem. I've gone through ATI 'tech support', though it's mostly an automatic message back telling me to do things I've already thought of.

Anyone have any input? Thanks in advance.

My advice is turn that VPU recovery off causes more problems then it fixes (which is nothing).

I've tried to turn off the VPU Recovery, but it causes the whole system to crash, rather than the VPU Recovery cycle.

Anyone else have any idea why this problem is happening?

Yes, the 'Overdrive' is not even checked, though according to ATI's expanation, that shouldn't cause any sort of problems because it should 'throttle down' when it gets too hot.

I'm almost positive it's not heat... but you never know.

The case I'm using has a good heat flow, 1 fan in front pulling in air, 2 in the back pushing out, fans on the AthlonXP and the 9600XT blowing all the time. I can't figure out what's going on with it still.

It could well be an issue with the shim ATI has on there, I've heard bad things about them. Try any OC tool, and underclock your card about 10%. If it is stable then, you may want to look at removing the Shim, or an RMA.
