Anyone know where to download the 8.12 beta's yet? I'm dying to try them out.....
 
I really hope these drivers help the 4870 overtake the GTX260 216 core again...
 
I'm a bit curious about the 8.12 myself. Usually its possible to get leaked beta's pretty easy. This time ATI seems to keep the cards close. Its a two part update for gaming as far as I've read from the leaked information. 8.12 is the first, while 9.1 contains the rest. Kinda like Nvidia's "big bang" and "big bang 2". I hope its ATI sideport that gets enabled in one of them, since I'm curious about how it will work. :)

Firstly, we don't know whether sideport will give a performance increase or not. Secondly, even if it will give a performance increase, AMD doesn't need to enable it yet since there is nothing faster than the HD 4870 X2 out there. My bet, sideport won't be enabled anytime soon.
 
Thats sad really. I'm getting a 4870X2 tomorrow (according to package trace). Its even overkill for my resolution (1920x1200), so its not about performance. I want to see ATI sideport in action to satisfy my interest of tech, not to get more FPS in games. :)
 
There was a guy posting the leak on Rage3d 2 weeks before each release for the last 3 months, but its so close now til official release so no biggy.
Me thinks sideport is ATI's last trump card awaiting a dual gpu card from Nvidia. Latest rumors I heard from XS nvidia fanboi posters is Q2 Nvidia GX2 monster coming. So expect sideport enabled there along with magical improved additional performance maximizing.
(Last few catalyst were geared more towards High Def functionality and stability).

I expect 8.12 to be great *crosses fingers.

While I would LOVE to believe that also, I won't hold my breath :).
 
8.12 will be good according to couple people I talked to on the beta team. Bump this thread on Dec 10 :)

by q2 you mean q2 of 2009 ?
 
I wouldn't expect any miracles, you're bound to be disappointed. Still, I'm sure there will be some decent improvements.
 
Coming from using a laptop with linux and fglrx, I've learned to never expect *anything* from ati drivers, specially when they say something.
 
I tried to install the driver but it seems that the driver only supports the lower range cards and igp.
 
My guess is there will only be enough improvement on 8.12 drivers so that the 4870 edges out the gtx260 core
216, and the 4870x2 expands it's lead over the gtx280. Either that, or a big disappointment / failure
on ATI's part.
 
but also the video offloading ATI mentioned, pretty much every video format around can be offloaded to the gpu with cat 8.12.... apparently...
