ATI 4850 strange behavior.

I have a Asus MB, and am running WinVista Home Prem. I installed the ATI 4850 and the temperature mod. Set it to 50%. Things seemed to be working well during the past four days. During that time I have discovered that I need a more powerful 12v rail if I hope to run games like Crysis (MY 12V rail is 17amps). Other games run just fine.

Yesterday, I turned on my PC and was called away to two hours and the PC was just was running at idle. When I came back the PC was making a rapid beeping sound and the two red diodes on the ATI card were on. PC would not respond to any key strokes, only thing I could do was reset. PC failed to start, so I had to power down.

Questions:

What were those two red diodes trying to tell me?

Do I have a driver issue or a power issue?

At this point, I don't trust my system to be left alone any more.

Thanks for your response.

Red Diodes tells you to not run a power video as this on a POS power supply with 17 amps on the 12v rail. Maybe 3 years ago, well not even as I think an X1900XT would've gotten blown by that psu also.

Anyways, this is a power issue, you can run non-intensive games ok, throw in crysis that brings everything down to its knees including the PSU and all goes to hell.

You can replace the power supply and see if the card will work again, but I think it's dead. Other components probably died too, who knows what the PSU took along with it.

What brand and wattage is your psu btw? I think I have a 300watter with a higher 12v rail than 17a, and it's a from a compaq computer.

Just F.Y.I. ATi recommends a minimum of about 30A 12v rail for a single HD4850. Maybe you should have considered that?

The card is NOT dead. Works fine.

I just want to know about the two red lights.

I have a Seasonic 550 watt PSU with two 12v rails - 1-17A and 1-16A.

Well ok, you forgot to mention those two very little details. . .

How many other peripherals do you have hooked up? (HDs, fans, CDRW, DVD, etc)
Your PSU should be able to power it fine unless you got a lot of extra draw from other peripherals.

I just built my system about 2 weeks ago and haven't had a problem running Crysis or any other GPU load testing tool.

I have two 12v 17A lines on my Antec ea430

I have three HD (two SATA and one PATA) and one external USB drive. Dual monitors, DVD drive, RW optical drive, 3 GB of RAM, 5 fans and the ATI 4850.

You should definitely able to power your setup with that PSU. I'm powering everything in my sig with a 520HX just fine.

Thanks Psychor.

I am beginning to wonder if this problem happened when Vista went into Standby. I wonder if the ATI driver has a bug. Anyone have any issues with card going into Standby.

I did with my 2600XT every now and then when it went into standby it would seem like my system would just hang. It'd run, but wouldn't come back. I believe it had to do with a screen saver I installed that came with the card. Earthsim.
