The AMD chip that I will be getting with my next computer will not come with a heatsink, I'll have to buy my own and figure out how to get everything working there without breaking the damn chip. I also decided to buy some thermal paste as well. This is gonna sound stupid, but do I use the thermal paste in conjunction with the heatsink? All the other CPUs I've dealt with in the past, they already had the heatsink attached to the CPU, so it was just plug and play for me.

Someone help a half-newb out? TIA.
 
Yes, you use the thermal compound in conjunction with the heatsink. For the AMD64 processor you want to use nothing less than the quality of Arctic Silver 3 silver-based compound.....as for damaging the processor, due to the heat spreader on the CPU, much like the P4, it's hard to damage it as long as you're not stupid....

As for suggestions for cooling, if you want quiet, I suggest the Zalman CNPS7000ACu Copper heatsink/fan combo....

Quality would definitely be the Thermalright SLK-948u fan.....
 
zalmans are awesome, you can probably just keep yours on full the whole time because its ALWAYS silent for me, "silent" meaning i can hear my other fans and not my zalman
