Athlon running really hot

Hey guys, I require your help. Here's my set up:

Case: Raidmax 268-wbp
Mobo: MSI km3m-v
CPU: athlon XP 1700
512mb of pc 2100 DDR
40 gig maxtor HDD

My problem is that my cpu is running at like... 200 degrees fahrenheit. I have a retail heatsink/fan from an athlon 2100. I don't understand why it would be running so hot. I've never encountered a problem like this before, and if anyone could, i would be most grateful.
 
Sounds like a faulty temp meter...

theres no way your cpu could be that hot.
make sure your heatsink is clean tho lol, other than that, im not real sure

Also you may want to go out and get some thermal grease, like som AS5
 
make sure your hsf is mounted correctly and the proper way...and also did you use any thermal grease??...just some things to try...and also...it dpeends on what program your using to see this.....if your using MBM it might not be set up properly...or you selected the wrong MOBO......just thinks to check.....
 
Of course i used thermal grease... :)

Also, I'm using the BIOS's PC Health menu.. Its telling me that the temp keeps on rising. I'm installing linux, and whenever it starts to do things (you know, installing anything) it locks up.
 
Overclocking at all?
Voltage correct?

Let us know anything you have changed, cause that thing is going to explode if it gets any hotter...

make sure you have the correct clock multiplyer for the cpu
 
my XP2200+ currently at 1833mhz runs at 125F, or 52C which is already too hot, but it is really buggered because on my old A7V8X it was 42 stock idle, changed to a Abit NF7-S, keeping all my old stuff and what would once OC to 2.04 ghz and stay at 50C now can't go past about 1.94ghz without getting hot feet. It's sad.

I suspect that's just misreporting, 200F equates to 80 or 90C, that is serious overheating and would only happen if the HSF wasn't properly attached, or not turning or something. And at those temps it would probably turn off or crash straight away. So worry, but not too much.
