I'm looking at an Athlon MP 2400, which is about the same price as an XP 2400 where I'm looking.

I'm curious, what's different about the MP chips? Do they work in standard Socket A boards (such as my AN35N-Ultra)? Do they have more cache? A different architechure? Are they unlocked?

I tried Google for some answers, but I suppose I'm not asking the right way...and searching the HardOCP forums is disabled by the administrator? Huh...strange. Anyway, I've never even payed the MPs much attention, and it's coming back to bite me now. Anyone have the answers?

they're just the same as the xp ones. The difference is that the L5 bridge is unlocked. That means they can run in a dual setup.

They don't have "extra" stuff in it..

Get an athlon XP mobile 2400+. They are only a little more but unlocked and much higher quallity than regular barton core athlon XP's. They run much cooler thanks to less voltage and will over clock much higher.

I was considering a mobile 2500 (1.83 GHz stock), but a 2400 runs at 2GHz stock, which will probably be all I'll really need. That, and with the popularity, the prices are becoming inflated. Price is a primary concern at the moment.

get a xp-m 2400+ its about what... 75 bucks? get it and a good mobo/ram/cooler and it will last you for a long time if you oc it

i can't find the MP 2400+ under $100... it is 114 or something at the egg... i think the demand made the prices go up... they definitely were $75 a week ago though..

Don't get the MP. There is something called the Athlon MP and the athlon XP and the Athlon XP-M (Mobile). We are suggesting you get the athlon XP-Mobile. It is made for laptops but runs great in a desktop. They should be like $75 online and they will overclock very high when you set the core voltage to about 1.65 or higher. Just be sure that you are up to setting a few parameters (FSB, multiplier, vcore) in your bios before you get the mobile chip or you will be stuck with a 1000MHz chip.
Just be sure that you DONT GET THE ATHLON MP FOR A SINGLE PROCESSOR MACHINE. It is a total waste of money unless you want to run a dual processor machine.

I understand the difference between an Athlon MP and an Athlon-M. I also know the MP's role as a server chip. I just didn't know about it's compatability with the average Joe's system. Now I do.

However, I was looking at a seller on ebay who apparently didn't know the difference between MP and XP, because his 2400 MP was auctioned at $50, in an unopened box. Unfortunately, I didn't get the winning bid, so I'm back to looking for a deal again. :(

Thanks for the help, everyone!

this thread is missing actual info

from most to least expensive:

2400-MP = XP core, 266 FSB, 256k cache, 2.0 ghz, open L5 bridge
2400-M = Barton core, 266 FSB, 512k cache, 1.8 ghz
2400-XP = XP core, 266 FSB, 256k cache, 2.0 ghz

2400-M are definitly what I recommend. They have the extra cache that neither other chip has, and that helps a LOT with any app thats SMP. Unlocking is simple, ive done it before on a few chips. They also run much cooler not only due to the default voltage, but due to the design (lowest clock on the steppings), so they will be cooler than the others stock. And finally, if you do plan to OC (via multi since MP boards dont lock the PCI and AGP bus speeds), this chip is unlocked. However I dont remember if the MP chipset has an option for changing the multiplier via BIOS, so you may very well have to use the wiretrick no matter which chip you try to OC.
