I for some reason want to build a cheap computer that hauls for gaming
but, as usual, my budget is not so great
i've got a video card (BFG 6800 OC)
so im fine for that matter
but i was thinking of getting a athlon mobile 2200 35 watt because me friend says you can overclock the crap out of them
is this true?
if so, how high have you seen them with air cooling?
 
Yes, you can overclock the crap out of the 2500+ and 2400+ mobiles. 2400+ has a lower voltage so you may be able to get a bit more out of it. I see the 2500+ more often bought though, so you can't go wrong. I imagine that if you pair it with a good zalman CNPS7000 or any sort of good heatsink, you'll hit over 2.4.
 
i've seen up to 2.7 @ 1.85v on aircooling with my 2400+ 35W AQYHA\A7N8X combo. I have a 2400+ IQYHA mobile on its way and I'm thinking of pairing it with a DFI LP nf2.
 
I might also do the same thing and get the 2200 mobile with a DFI LanParty Nforce II
 
my 2200+ 35w hit 2.55ghz. @ 1.85v.. my mobo doesn't like to go higher though...

but they haven't gone down in price one bit since i got mine almost a year ago.. i payed $77.. for a bit more.. you should go a64.. even s754...
 
I have the aforementioned overclocked athlon XP system and I think that a simple a64-3200+ is still better because it is just a superior core. Look into building a system with a 64bit cpu if possible. OC wont go as well but the newer featuers are there....
 
i have a mobile 2600 at 2530 mhz at 1.675 volts
220x 11.5 i think

i also have a s754 at 2.5 ghz
and a 939 3000 at 2.2 ghz


benchmark wise, they are all pretty much even.
give or take a few thousand
the 939 has the highest memory bandwidth of course, smokes them as a matter of fact.


games play the smoothest on the s754
so benchmark wise axp's are pretty close with lower end 64's but they just feel slower even at those higher speeds.
 
dunno if its a clawhammer
but its a 3400+ s754
beastly ass chip i tell you
 
if it's 1mb cache, you have a clawhammer, which would explain the gaming. a64's tend to like the cache more than bandwidth, though benches show everything being about equal.
 
I got some really good OC #'s out of an XP-M 2800+ I put in my brothers PC several weeks ago. I got lucky tho, it was $85 or $88 @ the Egg when I bought it. OC'd like crazy too, put my 2700+ to shame big time.

So yeah, get a nice XP-M and make sure to flash your bios ahead of time to the latest revision.

Either that or do what Eclipse said, plenty of good NF3 boards out there & they'll use AGP as well, so you dont have to change out your vid card.

But as long as the mobo you have now is a good OC'er, you shouldn't have a problem OC'ing an XP-M.

What mobo are you using right now? Or would you be upgrading the board too?
 
Might seem like a dumb question, BUT...

Are the VIA K8T800 chipsets compatible with the S754 DTR procs? I know everyone has said the nf3 was, just need to know about the K8T800 as well. Thanks!
 
depends on the bios.. i'm not 100% certain, but i believe the msi k8t neo supports mobiles too.
though, if you plan to oc that DTR, i'd steer away from the via chipsets
 
(cf) is right, stay away from via for htt 270 and higher. get an nf3 mobo, but not the vnf3-250, it hates on geforce 6 series cards in benchmarks, and real gaming too. get a referbed dfi lanparty ut 250gb and slap that dtr 3000+ in it. they will sing.
