I just bought a system with an Athlon 64 X2 4800 from Velocity Micro. So far I have been very happy and the system has been stable, but one thing has me concerned. When I first received the machine I installed the system monitoring tools and found the processor temperature to go up to 74'c when using Distributed.net to stress the cores.
When I called VM they asked if the system was unstable or rebooting at all, to which I replied no. They stated that the X2 4800 is OK up to 80'c. Everything I have been able to find on the net doesn't jive with this.
When VM wasn't willing to do anything I decide I had to. I started by upping the case fans from 2x20CFM to 2x24-41 (they scale as temps increase). That dropped me from 74 to 67'c.
That still didn't give me the warm and fuzzies, so next I attempted to install a side blowhole. I noticed that with the side door off my temps would drop considerably. This didn't go so well (anyone have tips for cutting into plexiglass?), but the fan is mounted and moving air into the case. This took me from 67 to 61'c.
Still not overwhelmingly pleased, I decided to try and replace the Zalman 7000B Aluminum with the 7000B Copper. I figured this would be easy as they had the same mounting bracket. This has taken me from 61'c to 57'c. I have tried remounting the HSF twice to be certain I got good contact, with no change.
A 74'c to 57'c is a nice drop, but I still feel I am close to the max temp. At this point I have tried all the logical solutions and I am beginning to believe I just have a hotter running core.
Does anyone have any experience with what I should be expecting or am I just asking for too much?
Any help appreciated....
