I have no idea what to do. My new clawhammer 3000+ was just set up last night. After reseating the HSF twice last night, the idle temps are still at 50C while the Folding temps are at 60C. I am pretty sure this is very high but I dont understand why. Can anyone confirm that this is high?

The heatsink is stock but it is the copper version for the 3700+. I was looking to OC this since it is a CG but with such high temps, I am afraid to even fold.

Help a folder pls. :(

 
Without any idea what the rest of your case looks like, I can only suggest this: make sure there's enough ventilation for the HSF. You don't want it to be ingesting the same air it just pushed through the heatsink. A nice 'crossbreeze' would help . . . if you don't already have one.

It does seem a bit hot.

 
Ok, lets start from the beginning.

Did you use AS5? Are you sure that the HSF is tightly seated on the chip? What speed is that fan spinning at? What is your core voltage?

Give us all the info you can.
 
Its an X-Alien case. I have the window open to get more air in but I am still confused. My old A64 ran at 43-46C idle w/ around 50-52 load and that was OCed from 1.8 to 2.25 ghz. :confused:

1)Using some generic thermal compound

2) quite sure its all the way int

3) spinning at 3300 rpm

4) Core voltage at 1.51 v
 
AS5 is going to help a lot there. Your stock voltage is 1.5? That seems a bit high to me. If you aren't overclocking, you might want to bump that down. 1.5 is what my 4000+ san diego is at right now, and thats with a 300mhz OC.

Its a socker 754 clawhammer hence the 1.5 voltage. I will go about picking up AS5. Frankly I am a bit :confused: because I use this thermal compound with a Zalman back home and temps never go above 55 with 100% load and a 450 mhz o/c and the ambient temps around 30-35.


 
Everything sounds in order....I would get the AS5 and also, make sure that you are not using too much thermal compound as that can act as a heat insulator and bake the chip.

Is no one a fan of Ceramique compound? Just curious really, a good compound can make a big difference. Not to imply anything about AS5.

 
Also, what mobo and bios version? I've seen way too many posts with people having screwy temp probe readings...alot were solved with a newer bios...or just ignoring the probe temps and using the calibrated finger test on the hsf :p

Chaintech VNF3-250 10/29/2004 BIOS. I switched to the 9/16/2004 and still showed the same temps. I tried to again go to 9/2005 BIOS and the mobo did not post. When I tried to do fold the temps went to 65 and still rising before I turned it off. :eek:

To test if there was an airflow problem, I reseated the heatsink with a fresh coat of silver and directly blowing a fan onto the mobo. The system temps instantly dropped by 5C but the CPU temps remained high. I think my thermal compound may be failing, is that possible? :confused:
 
Have you tried the calibrated finger test yet? If your cpu is really at 65c, the base of the hs is going to be HOT. If not, I would say the temp probe is afu......

Forgive me if this is a stupid idea but...

Would it work to hold a thermometer on the HS to get a temp reading? That way he would know if the sensor isnt working properly.
 
ok I tried your guys' suggestions and here is what I got:

1) The heatsink feels slightly warm to the touch, nothing to indicate the 60+ temps I am getting.
2) I played around with the latest BIOS and then went back to last years' BIOS. Temps are still the same.
3) I underclocked the PC by lowering the muliplier and lowered the voltage to 1.425 which is the lowest it goes. Temps are still the same
4) I reseated the heatsink one more time and made sure the retention brackets were not loose, temps are still the same.
5)I downloaded Speedfan which has 2 different values in its sensors for Temp1. One is 61-63C and the other is 51C, both at load. Any way I can figure out which is the right one?

So right now my money is on a busted temp reading. FAH is running at stock betwenn 61-63C.

Also when I was installing the HSF, it was quite easy and did not take much physical pressure to push the clips in so that has me worried as well since the XP HSF was a bitch to install. Anyone had experience with stock A64 HSF? Do you have to exert a fair/high amount of pushing to get the clip fit underneath.

Also I should not be able to set my multipliers higher than 10 but there is the option to do that? Do I have an unlocked Clawhammer? :eek:

I will OC now and see what the temps are like to really check the probe.

 
I have a thought here....if you have a friend that has a laser temp probe, these are very accurate in measuring temps. Mechanics and A/C guys use this lot, so if you know any they will probably have one!

 
After some very detailed forum reading at PCPER forums, looks like the VNF3-250 BIOS has some issues with the CG clawhammer.

The 7/29/04 and higher BIOS shows 53 idle 62-65 load. I moved back to the 3/08/2004 and the temps dropped down to 20c.

Looks like I will be buying a temp probe or something. Or Prime the shit out of my OC to see if the temps are bad enough to cause problems.

I kinda liked this board but I guess only if its a CO proc. :(

Anyone recommend a good/cheap temperature probe?

 
Since the temp probe is imbedded in the cpu itself, you're not going to be able to replace it. There is a very expensive and technically challenging way to get some temp readings.....look here for more info.

Yikes. I think I will stick with assuming that the temps are about 15-20 degrees off due to what I have heard. anyway i have managed to get a prime stable OC at 2.26 or so I hope.
