Hey guys, I am soon to receive my replacement mobo for my athlon 64 3200+ s754, I am about to go buy a tube of arctic silver 5 @ compusa, when i get my board..how would I apply the as5 to the cpu?

I have heard of two way; put a 1.5 grain size of a rice and squash the heatsink on the cpu?(in the middle)

or... use a credit card and spread the as5 evenly on the cpu?


Also....which as5 are availible @ compusa? are those the 12grams tubes or smaller ones..? thnx
 
i have xp-90 and 3400+ Clawhammer running at 2440. I spread the AS5 in thin layer with Credit card and applied HS. My temps are 32/40
 
Which way is better? The AS5 intructions way (1.5 grain size, squashing in middle) or the credit card way?
 
I got much better results on my A64 3500+ going the "1.5 grain of uncooked rice' way as the AS5 websites instructions say.

because sometimes the MFR way is not the best performing way :) I mean spreading and covering the whole cpu might be better and that is my question..which way is better :)

but i found my answer..I looked around in google and finally found some people saying that the rice grain method works best for a64's

Be careful about the generic ones you buy at Best Buy or Compusa.
They might not be 100% pure. Grab the Artic Silver brand.

i'll confirm that answer, with the added comment i tested both ways, and the drop in the middle gave me load temps that were 3c cooler after minimal as5 curing, it probably would have widened some more as time went on.
