Athlon 3500 Vs P4

Would an AMD Athlon (socket 939) 64 3500+ yeild a better performance and if so..how much better over a Northwood P4 3.2 Ghz OC to >> 3.33 Ghz

well, not much, but if u get good cooling for the amd, u can easily oc it to, i think, intel 4ghz speeds

The Intel you can possibly get to 3.7ish GHz. The Intel will of course be stronger in some cases and weaker in others vs. AMD. The AMD won't overclock as much, but you can get it to the 3800+ rating. You can't actually equal the model 4000+ chip as the difference is in the cache memory not the clock speed vs. the 3800+. So you'd have to OC the CRAP out of it to beat out a 4000+.

Anyway they are both good products. Do your research, decide what you do with your system and pick the one that's better for you.

I already have a P4 3.2 Ghz Northwood >> OC to 3.33 Ghz. However, I saw this deal..where the Athlon 64 3500 +/ A motherboard (939) were selling for about $400 as a package. I was thinking whether to upgrade the mobo/chip or the graphic cards which also costs $400.

I have been lately really wanting a Athlon processor or a new mobo for my computer.. (see my sig) I want a more enthustiastic computer..my current mobo w/ the 865 chipset 1) does not perform as well as the newer 875 2) I cant overclock my mobo (Stupid Intel mobos for not letting me oc, or am I stupid for buying one w/o research ??? ) greater than 4%

Imho, You better off with(in order of priority) :1.Graphic card's upgrade- 2.phase changer cooling- 3.psu upgrade and 4. Memory upgrade. Each of 'em cost around $300-400.

Why not get a newer motherboard?? I mean you can get a good board for fairly cheap now and make up the loss by selling the old board.

LOL- True.
However, that's not what I meant. I want an AMD processor becuase its more options to play around with. Like I mention- I am sort of bored of my mobo right now because its very limiting in terms of what I can do with it... It wont let me change my FSB by increments of 1..rather by percent. And the greatest percent of OC I can do is 4%. Thats why I want a CPU/and or mobo thats more "interesting"

i would take that 400$, spend 250$ on a 6800NU, and takign the other 150$ for a good mobo like an ASUS P4C800 DLX or an Abit IC7 series mobo to overclock the 3.2, that would be a much better way to spend your money.
