ATH-M50 vs HM5?

Alright. I was pretty much sold on the Audio Technica ATH-M50's. But then I read some problems about the heat it generates. I am quite bothered with the head generation on the ears by big headphones, so this is now the only issue holding me back from getting this one.

Does anyone have these, and can tell me how bad it really is? I've read about a so called sock mod that will make it a little more tolerable, but I am not sure what this does to the SQ on this particular headphone.

It think the headphone looks amazing though, and it is definitely my first choice.


Then there is the HM5, which I've only heard great things about. I think it is a even a little cheaper aswell. The previously mentioned "ear heat" issue is much less of an issue with this headphone apparently. And I like the fact that I can take out the cables incase I ruin one.

No real question on these, unless maybe someone has both and can tell me which one they prefer.

Have you used an isolating headphone before? Your ears will get no air and heat will simply build up, it's just one of those things you deal with or get different headphones.

Not all closed headphones create a seal. Denon Dx000 series for example uses baffles and actually vents the drivers despite being closed so they don't exhibit the same symptoms usually. I can't speak for the HM5 but having tried them I don't think the M50 is that bad at all as far as sealed headphones go.
 
What are you using them for and do they have to be closed? The M50 is not a bad headphone, I would say they are overpriced a little bit. I like my SR850 with the sock mod more b/c it is less expensive and essentially the sound quality is even at the least with the M50 and they are semi open so my ears never sweat. Plus, they weight nothing while still being pretty big and deep in the cups.

From what I have read, the HM5 is probably better in terms of build quality, detail of sound and comfort. It is closed though so I am not sure how it would do with gaming and sound stage. I would love to try one.
 
Yeah I did own a pair before. And I can't say it extremely bothered me, but I did stumble upon a topic with complaints with made me a little hesitant, thinking it was more of an issue with these.

As for usage, mainly just music, movies and games. And yeah I've not read a bad word on either of these.

No they don't necessarily have to be closed, it is just that these 2 stood out when I did some research. However if quality remains the same then obviously cheaper is better ;).

Well the Samson SR850 of mine has had the crap kicked out of it with no issues if that helps. For the price, it probably is the best deal going. Not the cheapest, but tough and fairly well balanced sound imo. Just make sure to take off the stupid foam driver cover and the cardboard "sonic filter" or whatever it is, do a sock mod on the pads and voila! You have a $50-60 killer headphone.
 
The M50s are a solid headphone if you can get it for the right price. It tends to be around 150 these days prior from it being around 100-110.

If you are worried about the heat you can replace the pads with some Beyer DT250 Velour ones.

The HM5 is more on the neutral side from the things ive read.

Also if you can give us some info about your tastes of music maybe we can help you choose between them.
