Atari VCS preorder starting May 30's with AMD processor

Welp, back with more news. Looks like Atari decided to hire Rob Wyatt and Tin Giant to work on the VCS. They are being hired as hardware engineers. By all accounts Wyatt and his company are pretty damn good at what they do. Great news, right? Well...Maybe?

So....They were going to open up pre-orders last year before "something went wrong" and they delayed them. Yet here they are, six months later, and are just now hiring a hardware design firm. They have never shown off a working system, they have never shown anything working on actual hardware, and apparently they didn't even have a design firm ready before opening pre-orders. Either that or things went so catastrophically bad that they needed to hire outside help to fix their shit. Neither is exactly a good sign. Really leads me to believe that Atari needs the money from the indiegogo campaign in order to even finish the VCS, which would mean they're not exactly being truthful about the purpose of the campaign. Also means that there is no way in hell that the 2.9 currently raised is going to be enough to cover everything.

To add some positive light to this: Bringing in Wyatt and Tin Giant should mean good things for the final product, whenever it appears, they bring a lot of design expertise and skill with them to the project.

Hey, I've actually good good news for once. The new system architect for the VCS. Rob Wyatt, did a little FAQ blog post. Some highlights:

The RAM has been doubled from 4GB to 8GB. This is a pretty big jump.

All of the RAM will be available to games, the OS is not reserving any.

They chose to stick with Bristol Ridge due to thermals. Wyatt said that a thermally constrained Ryzen APU would barely be better than the Bristol Ridge so they're using the money for more memory instead. If they went with Ryzen they would have to increase the cost of the system in order to redesign the cooling capabilities.

The goal is to allow the Bristol Ridge APU to run at max speed.

It's little oddly written, but it sounds like other controllers (along with mice and keyboards) will work with the VCS as it is compliant with the OS.

Original 2600 controllers will not work with the VCS.

All VCS systems are dev kits. After signing up for the developer program developers will be able to download the SDK and get to work.
