ATA100 and ATA133

I am wanting to buy a new HDD for a 3 year old Dimension 4550 and the Dell stats say it only supports upto ATA100 but i have found this thread which says I can set it to auto and it will clock back to 100 if it's 133. I wan to buy a samsung 200GB ATA133 or a Seagate 250GB ATA100.

So will it clock back am I am going to upgrade this comp this year.
 
no problem! :) forgot to mention, if you have not already done so, you may want to look into slipstreaming SP2 onto an installation cd to avoid the whole 'only seeing 130GB' issue assuming the box will get XP.
 
The comp did come with xp home :) And i'll do that because I hate re downloading all that stuff :)
 
Make sure you use an ata-133 compatible IDE cable or the system will be super unstable. You can tell the difference in flat ribbon cables because 133 compatible's have more wires and they're smaller.

It won't run at ata 100/133 without the 80 wire cables. It won't even run at 100/133 if you have a cdrom drive on the same channel with a 100/133 drive and an 80 pin cable. I've never had it introduce stability running ata100 drives on a 40 wire cable.

I'm saying that using an ata-133 drive, even at ata-100, without an ata-133 cable will be unstable.

Either way, the op can easily fool around with it and see what works :)
 
It won't introduce any instabilities I've got several systems running with the exact setup you're describing without any issues. It will run at the fastest setting it can. There is not difference between a ata100 cable and an ata 133 cable, both are 80 wire cables.

*shrugs* I tried running a comp with an ata/133 hd and an old ata/100 cable, it would crash on boot. As soon as I put a new, 133 compatible cable in it was fine. I know that the cable it was crashing on was fine, too.
