ATA Controller Card - Better than Mobo?

Wondering how good Serial ATA Controller Cards are as I'm currenlty using all my SATA mobo ports and I'm using 3/4 IDE connections, compared to a mobo based one?

Considering getting at least a 2 port card to put in the DFI Ultra-D.
