At home fileserver?

I need help with hardware and configuration choices for an at-home, RAID based fileserver.

The solution I’m leaning towards right now would be a RAID 1+0 (maybe) file server outside the cramped confines of my daily-use computer, where everything is now, that could be accessed through a network by multiple machine around the house (I already have the network for this). The data would be home video files, DVD’s, audio files, digicam photo’s, program installs, etc., and for storing backups of our daily-use comps (~600gb right now and growing). I figure to start with, I need something in the terabyte range.

I’d prefer to be able to interface with it from one of the computers I already have in my house, but it is not necessary. I’m not sure the operating system I’m most familiar with is friendly towards that sort of thing :) …windows… I wouldn’t mind learning something new if that will allow this box to be free of a bloated operating system and requiring monitor/mouse/keyboard hookup only occasionally.

I need redundancy, stability, and upgradeability; something that can grow to meet my family’s needs (me, wife, and two boy’s getting involved with using computers) for the next 5-7 years at least. Being able to copy drives for off-site storage would be nice. Anything I’ll be putting together here in the next few months can hopefully scoot our bits and bytes to newer better technology past that time. :)

Let me know what equipment/software is optimal for this type of setup (case, controllers, mb/proc, hard disks, etc). Or even pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks!!

You might consider RAID5 for storage since it is a lot more efficient on the drive usage and still redundant. RAID1 / RAID 10 = 50% loss in redundancy. RAID5 = 1 drive lost for redundancy. 5x250GB would be a good start for you with roughly 1TB of usable storage after RAID5. Make sure you get a RAID controller that support online expansion or you will have to rebuild the whole array in case you want to add more storage.

Looks good. I hear rumors that you'll be upgrading it soon. No mention of specific components or price on your website but I'll browse your thread here to see what I can come up with. Thanks for the ideas.
 
mashie your 1TB server looks awesome! As of right now I am running 4 160gb hds in a raid 0+1 I hope to one day be able to switch over to a raid 5 so i can take advantage of the extra space plus have the redundancy.
