So, recently I built a new computer and everything was going swimmingly. I overclocked the RAM (among other things) to a stable level and began using it. I had to up the voltage a little on the RAM in order to get it to be stable. Now, at this point, whenever the GPUs are under load the sound will crackle a little in games. The sound crackles even when running a stress test on GPUs and watching Youtube. When there is no load on the GPUs, no crackle. When I dropped the overclock on the RAM the crackle disappeared ... even when the GPUs are running full tilt. So, it seems that the issue is cause from the increased voltage on the RAM. (The RAM need a little voltage even to run the factory overclock ... teaches me for buying Kingston :( )

So, I bought the motherboard open box and before returning it I just want to see if its going to be a problem with all ASUS Z170-a mobos or all mobos in general?

I was having this issue as well. At first I thought it was just the Asus Z170-A motherboard. And in a way it is. It did not make any difference whether I was I using onboard or sound card. What I found in my overclocking, even when setting voltages to manual was the SA( I believe) might of been the VCCIO voltage but one of them was over volting by a huge amount. Once I adjusted that one down to below what I was imputing and letting it over volt to my desired level the popping, crackling, and sound drops out went away. Hope this might work for you. I discovered the one that had the incorrect voltage being applied via HWinfo64 and the bios monitor tab not the screen where you manually input the voltage.

If I get around to it, I will check the exact voltage in the bio in a bit since I just noticed and missed we have the same motherboard. This issue was driving me crazy.

/edit Incidientally I run my Ram at 1.44 to achieve stable 2x8 3200 Ghz, this is not the issue that was causing my sound issues.

/edit I just rebooted and checked. On my Z170-A it is the SA that was over volting causing the issues. It was exceeding 1.3 on the SA. I have my SA now set at 1.18 and my VCCIO at 1.2 and rock stable at 4.7 Ghz with my Ram at 3200. The SA still over volts to 1.23 when I manually set it to 1.18.
