Hey all!

My Creative X-Fi Extreme Music PCI card just died so I bough a Asus Xonar D2x PCIE card. I have a set of Creative 5.1 Gigaworks G550 speakers and a Turtle Beach Z6a 5.1 cans for when I am gaming. I am running the latest drivers for the device and I am using windows 7 64bit.

The standard stereo quality of the card is excellent and the 5.1 works very well in films but the 5.1 has this strange problem when listening to music and using it for gaming. There seems to be a delay (although very small) between the sound coming out of the front speakers and then the same sound coming out of the rear speakers, this gives an almost "Flanger" effect which sounds really bizarre. It doesn't happen in films because they rarely have the same noise coming out of multiple channels simultaneously so the delay is not apparent, but on games when you hear characters speaking and it comes from all the speakers it sounds like they have been put through a vocoder.

The problem persists with music, if I use the Asus Audio Center to expand normal stereo music across the 5.1 speakers it sound largely excellent until somebody starts singing when the tiny delay rears its head again and makes them sound all computer-ey. Its very difficult for me to explain but my girlfriend agrees that I am not going mad and that the effect isn't super pleasant, this problem happens with both my headphones and with my speakers.
I have had a fiddle with the settings inside the Audio Center and couldn't really improve the situation.

Apart from this the card performs excellently and the actual quality of the audio is far better than my old X-Fi.

My X-Fi did have many failings such as the craptastic drivers etc but It didn't suffer with any of these problems on the same speakers doing the same things, I would regularly expand stereo music to the rear speakers to get a "faux surround" effect which worked perfectly.

BTW I uninstalled all the creative drivers that I could find before-hand but maybe there are still a few things I need to clear out?

newest drivers for it, or go back one set, you may also see in the ctrl panel the option of using extra channels, as well the the diffrent setups forfor the GX and all that stuff.

If this helps, I have my DX set to use 8 channels, sample rate is 192Khz, PCM is checked off as is the dolby stuff, I run it as hifi mode unless I am using headset.

In windows itself I hvae playback and record both set to use the highest quality playback there is, and on the actual icon for the control panel for the Xonar, right click it, you will see ASIO, I have this set to 32 bit and 4ms latency.

Also do make sure that you do not have the fancy AEC and all the enable in Xonar control panel, and the monitoring is turned off.

Also just to point out if there is a slight delay between sound of front/rear panels, I know its probably very distracting, but, at least for gmaing wise there should be this effect though, if it pans the wrong way, it probably breaks the immersion and not increases it. Also expanding stereo to 5.1 there is always going to be some weird stuff as it has to emulate and break this to multiple channels. I notice this with my X-540 speakers and pressing its button to "shift" it to 5.1, I notice it way more in world of tanks then anything else, putting the panel to audio channel 8 channels did help this alot, a did making sure dolby was not on.
 
Thanks for the suggestions Dragon, Your settings pretty much mirror what I have here. I guess I am going to have to live with it. I just find it surprising that the D2x has trouble doing what the X-Fi could do without a problem or any delay :( ... Must be something to do with the hardware I guess.. shame :(

it might be a known issue, I would however send an email to ASUS support, they may have insight on it.

I believe however it may have something to do with the "emulating" of the speaker into 5.1. it is different if it is native 5.1 compared to "emulated" afterall. I know with mysetup as well, I had to notch down the volume on a few of the speaers to get a more balance sound, I wonder if for one reason or another your speakers got "reveresded" or if you set the dolby to a large room or something which is causing it to treat the seperate speakers with differing latencies? I know all the extra like flexbass, AEC, Karoke and such may have an effect on this, but it could be something as simple as the wires being to long or somehting silly like that, or the setup itself. I know it shouldnt be, but Creative and ASUS are 2 very different designs after all, maybe its just something you overlooked.

in windows right click spekar icon on the task bar, go under playback, dbl click speakers, under the advanced tab, set the default format as high as it goes, and uncheck the allow applications to take exclusive control(this will uncheck both) you can also do the same for recording/microphone and do make sure the speakers are associated with the proper "port" set as the default device for playback in my case it says "speakers ASUS XONAR DX AUDIO DEVICE default device" with a green check mark on it, this might help?

I would go to ASUS though, there maybe different drivers, or at least you could check on thier forums or put a new thread, someone maybe able to offer you insight on this. I know the DX had issues for the first while, but since newest driver, I have not noticed much if anything, but, I do know there is some latency as you have described, I really only notice it with WoT and not with BF3 or other games.

Hopefully someone can offer some insight into this, sorry I couldn`t help more.
