So my system is in my sig. When i overclock my I7 920 to 3GHZ (on air right now) everything seems fine for about a week. I ran prime95 for 6hrs without any problems. But then, i try to boot it back up from going to sleep and it says overclock failed. I try to redo the OC but it still fails. So after booting back into win 7 a couple of times, I decide to try OC again. And it works with the exact same configuration as before. But then it only last for about a week and then says OC failed.

Since i couldnt sleep last night i stayed up all night and saw that my computer randomly turned on during the night and then went back to sleep. Then when i woke up it the OC failed.

Stuff I have tried so far:

1. Ran mem test on all 3 sticks of ram without any problem
2. Made sure the ram was not being OC
3. ran prime 95 for 6hrs without any problem
4. updated bios to latest
5. Cleared the cmos

BTW i dont know if it matters but i have Win 7 64bit with SP1 installed. I am going to disable the sleep mode and turn on hibernation instead and see if that helps.

Any information or help would be greatly appreciated since I am getting watercooling stuff this weekend to OC higher.
 
Check to see if you have the latest BIOS for your mother board.
 
I have two encounters with this issue... so you can try it out.

1. On my personal system (specs in sig), I had the same problem as you did. After changing some parts around, I plugged in the reserve PSU that I kept. The overclocking problem disappeared.

2. On a customer's system, the overclocking problem disappeared with a replacement of the CMOS battery.

I had the same PSU when i overclocked it on a different motherboard so i dont think that is it. I can try the CMOS battery however, it is a brand new motherboard. I thought it should be ok but maybe that its problem. Thanks for the hints.
 
Possible cmos jumpers? Check all jumpers for correct position.
