asus upgrade questions

I have an asus x83vb-x1. t5800@2.0ghz on the PM45 cantiga chipset. I have some questions about upgrading it a little and since searching the internet didnt yield many answers i figured id ask here and hopefully talk to some fellow laptop owners.

Everest reports that the pm45 chipset will support up to 1066 ddr3 ram. Right now newegg has a sale going on and i was thinking of upgrading from the stock Qimonda ddr2 800 sticks. IT would cost about 50 bucks and considering i only paid 500 for this refrub laptop i thought it might help a little. Even though the chipset supports it, could it be possible the BIOS does not? I upgraded to the 207 bios that apparently added the option of increasing to 8gb ram...but no mention if ddr3 support was added. actually there is no information as to what the BIOS revisions were...

I'm also curious what my processor upgrade options are...from the t5800 i can obviously go to the t9300 but i was also curious if i could go to the P series processors as well with the 1066mhz FSB.

This laptop has an expressgate slot on it...I know i can put in a tv tuner or something like that but is there anything else id be able to throw in there to increase performance?

My final question is regarding my HD upgrade options...storage space isnt an issue but whats the fastest thing going for laptops these days?

Thanks in advance.

Your laptop should support the memory.

As far as the processor goes, as long as it is the same socket type it should work. They normally change the socket type everytime a new chipset is introduced into laptops so people don't mix.

So if you have a 1066fsb then it should be able to use the memory clocked at 1066 , as well as use processors that run at a 1066 fsb.

As far as hard drives go, if you want performance then you can't beat a SSD. The difference between the conventional drives and the SSD are quite large, particularly when compared to 2.5" conventional drives.

Just be sure to do your homework on the SSD you choose to buy. Basically don't get a JMicron controller based SSD.

Well right now i have a t5800...with the 800fsb. I know in my gaming right i can support up to a 1333mhz fsb. Is the same true of laptops? Can I put a 1066mhz fsb processor in here and expect it to work?

You can put a 1066Mhz fsb CPU in a PM45 chipset. You cannot use 1066Mhz DDR3 if the notebook came with DDR2. You cannot get 1333fsb.

i didn't notice you that it said ddr2-800

he is right about that. DDR2 sodimms are 200-pin while ddr3 sodimms are 204-pin, so they are physically different.

i see. so my best bet would be just finding a t9300 on the cheap then? Egg wants like $300 or something for it...but honesty 2.0ghz is fine right now. I havent had any luck overclocking it though...setfsb didnt work. Guess my best bet is finding an SSD.
