This problem changes colors everytime I post, I swear. So I just built my system and when I tried booting it up it wouldn't work. At first I thought I shorted out the board, but then I decided to test it a little bit just to see if that was true. So I tested it out and tried different parts and whatnot, and still no response. Everything gets up and running, the mobo led says that it has power, but that's about it -- no display, no audio messages, no beeping, nothing. So finally I decided to plug in some headphones, and sure enough I get a message saying "System failed cpu test". I know the cpu is fine... it's a brand new Athlon64 FX-53. Anyone have any ideas about what I can do? Please help... this needs to be fixed by this coming sunday.

havin the exact same problem with my board...first broke an AMD 3000+ tryin to install the HSF. Bought a new one, put it in with the stock HSF and same problem. Got my mobo from newegg.

Got mine from zipzoomfly. I don't think I broke my chip... but I have another board shipping to me (hopefully it'll get here on tuesday) so I'll test that out and get a refund on the first one. That's the best I can do right now.

This fixed it for me....did u plug in the 4-prong power connector to the left of the processor. I didn't because i thought it was only for P4s (don't ask me why). Anywhooo....this fixed it for me, good luck.

I wish that fixed it for me, lol. I had the plugged in the whole time :-/

I'm glad to hear your problem is fixed, though, congratulations. It somehow seems like everyone else's problems are fixed but mine, lol.

is there any way you could get a hold of another chip to test with? also, it goes against everything we've been taught but boot the chip withou the heatsink on it, just for like 10 seconds and see what happens.

/me kicks the n00bie for being, well, a n00bie

That will FRY the chip, no if's and's or but's. Boot up an Athlon without the HS and you may as well head for Fry's, etc to pick up a new chip. Think about it, my processor at idle with stock HS and Fan sits at a nice comfortable 41C. That's with a heatsink that has the equivilent surface area of 10+ chips. Take that heatsink off and all the heat is getting crammed into that nice little 0.75 x 0.75 inch die with no place to go. After about 0.5 seconds the chip will smoke, let alone 10 seconds.

Lol, definitely. AMD chips will not underclock themselves either... they'll just go and burn out. I have another mobo shipping into me hopefully very soon which i'll test with... then i'll use its box to RMA the other one ;)

i'd keep googling it, but all I could find was remember you have the additionaly mobo power cord plugged in

I tried looking at the Asus list of supported RAM, and found a nice 512MB Kingston pc3200 edition that is supported and I could buy for $100. I'm getting it today. If it works out... I will be ordering 1.5 more gigs of it. Anyone wanna buy some Corsair pc3200 1GB RAM sticks? I've got them here for around $230 each.
