Why is it next to impossible to find one these monitors in stock anywhere? Is Asus purposely keeping stock low so the demand is high and sell out every time?

It hasn't been in stock for at least a month or more.

Are there going to be any competitors to this monitor soon? Why can't any other vendors get the same LCD panels from the manufacturer and make their own version. Asus surely doesn't manufacturer the LCD panel so other vendors should have access to it to make their own monitor variant.
 
It has been in stock several times, but each vendor sells out in about 10-15 minutes. Best bet is to use nowinstock.net and have it send text alerts to your phone. That's how I got two of them last week.

I really doubt they would be artificially limiting the number to keep demand high when they have the first GSYNC monitor out and know the competition is coming soon. They're probably pushing them out as fast as they can. They probably only have one factory set up to make them and simply underestimated the demand.

Your best bet at getting one is from a brick and mortar store because everyone that wants one is watching the the every website like a hawk and they sell out within minutes.
 
Don't worry, they'll up production and soon they'll be everywhere. Unless they are having production/qa issues...people seem to be returning them left and right.
 
Don't buy one of those things. It is a LCD. You have dual 290Xs and a 4790K; don't waste the performance on a LCD. The PG278Q costs $800. You could get a used FW900 or other CRT for that much and have higher refresh rates, higher resolution, better color, and zero motion blur.

The FW900 can't even come close to doing 2650x1440@144hz or 120hz.

Actually I would say there is plenty of reason to artificially limit production to increase demand. Just think about gamer mentality, the mentality on Hardforums, and consumer mentality in general. Psychologically it makes plenty of sense. And in fact, it wouldn't make any sense if it wasn't specifically this monitor. If you tried to do this for literally pretty much any other monitor out there, it wouldn't work, but this is the only 1440p 144Hz G-Sync monitor in existence. A few people to spread ripples, and then gradually distribute it to a very high demand so that it sells out instantly and spreads more ripples until the next wave. The people that don't have one, covet it because they've been hearing so much and it seems to be unattainable, one-of-a-kind, etc. Adding difficulty of procuring probably helps make people want it even more. It also probably helps protect against some of the returns they would normally get, because people know they aren't getting another one for at least a very good while! Moving on... The higher the demand but the lower the supply, the higher the price goes. You can see that in effect on Ebay, where people are paying north of 1200$ for it.

If they just went and actually stocked up release and then just sent every one of them out at once to suppliers... it probably wouldn't have gained so much demand.

Not that it needed it at the rate it's selling out afterwards anyway. But I highly doubt that ASUS could only afford to produce this many. This is ASUS we're talking about...

It's not a bad option... aside from, you know:
- Lower screen estate (by a LOT)
- Paying for a used monitor that you have absolutely no warranty on
- Having to calibrate it every half a year
- Needing a good desk that's huge and sturdy to put it on (which I have)
- Being limited to wiring someone money to get one, or getting it on Ebay and then having to shell out around 300$ on the Squaretrade warranty so that you're at least protected for 2 years.
- No 3D
- No G-Sync


But it will have better colors and whatnot. I just listed more cons in the FW900 thread and I don't believe it is worth it, except maybe a cheap one on Craigslist.
 
The OCUK forums mentioned a rumor that there is/was a global shortage on G-sync modules. NVIDIA may have ramped up production in the last few month's due to more manufacturer's producing G-sync capable monitors, though, which could explain why we've regularly seen them in stock as of late. Keep in mind that the PG278Q is also using a panel that is supposedly difficult to produce, which would also contribute to low supply.

Um LOL...sorry to break it to you pal, but the 290Xs DVIs DO NOT SUPPORT ANALOG OUTS!!!!!!

Yea it was a bit of a problem when I tried to play with my FW900 on it....sorry ass AMD :mad:
