Not to have one thread to talk about the two Steam Machines that Asus has released, I am making a thread just for the GR8.

This one has a core i7, 750ti, and according to Engadget only occupies 2.5L of space (although I'm finding that very difficult to believe at the moment)

The console-sized ROG GR8 Gaming Desktop will ship with Windows 8.1, but Asus says it will also be compatible with Valve’s SteamOS and Steam Controller. A company press release indicates Asus also plans to “launch a Steam specific model once Valve is ready.” The ROG GR8 will be available with Intel Core i7 processors and Nvidia GeForce GTX 750Ti. The box will have a side panel that allows for quick updates to its memory and storage, but it sounds as though the rest of it will be sealed.

That's a pretty neat looking form factor. It'll be interesting to see how the Alienware Steam Machine compares, which will be close in volume. I'm assuming that'll be using something like a 750Ti or 860M.

The other interesting Computex announcement that's even smaller is Gigabyte's new Nvidia Brix Gaming unit. It looks like it is just slightly bigger than NUC sized (extra space for a pair of 40mm fans?) - ~1L and has an i5/760M. The most detailed report/breakdown I could find so far is in German (w/ video of internals).
 
I wonder how the gpu and cpu are cooled. Hopefully they have their own separate cooling fans. It would be a bummer if it was a 750TI soldered on. I also wonder if they are using a desktop or mobile i7. They could use the T desktop model of the i7 for less heat.
 
Hey Forum,

Does anybody know if this machine is compatible with ultra wide monitors (2560 x 1080), because I experienced difficulties getting my Mac Book Pro Retina (2012) to work with it. I am just wondering wheather it will work when I plug the GR8 in, or if it will just be streatched again like with the MBP.

What kind of issues were you having with your macbook pro? I have a 2012 Mac Mini that has no issues with my Dell Ultrawide (U3415W at 3440 x 1440). I just plugged it into the monitor and it worked perfectly (on both HDMI and thunderbolt/displayport).
